I'll be away from most of the Internets all day (although likely active on Twitter), at the AcademiX conference at Northeastern (which is also at Emory, Ohio State, and San Diego State; yay, technology). If it's half as good as yesterday's pre-conference on epub, ibooks, and the actual creation process (with a huge focus on accessibility and other stuff), it'll be awesome.

But in lieu of content, a question:

I've started actually going to a gym. And as a way of combining my interests in both multitasking and avoiding interacting with other people, I like to use my iPod. I prefer listening to podcasts to music when doing so. I'd rather have a backlog of podcasts to listen to than run out, so tell me what your favorite podcasts are. I'm only interested in audio ones, of course. My primary criteria are that the podcast be entertaining and interesting. Big names are largely irrelevant to me.

Ones I subscribe to already include: I Should be Writing, Kingdom of Loathing, Nerdist, the Guardian's Science Weekly, and My Life as a Foodie.

What else should I add?

My husband, a podcast junkie, enjoys almost everything from the HowStuffWorks.com family. His favorite is Stuff You Should Know. I like Stuff You Missed In History Class.

Wait Wait Don't Tell Me is generally amusing. Something new-to-me is Q (http://www.cbc.ca/q/) from CBC. I'm also fond of Selected Shorts for the storytelling.

Oh, and before I forget, you *could* listen to The Mask of Inanna (http://www.themaskofinanna.com/), done by the fine people at PMRP.

StarShipSofa, Lightspeed, Fantasy Magazine, Clarkesworld, EscapePod et al, the Drabblecast... those are my primary fiction podcasts. I also like the QuackCast, Radio Free Skaro, Astronomy Cast (Huuuuge archives on that one), Beware the Hairy Mango, Made of Fail, The Poufwa Exchange, and In Our Time with Melvin Bragg.

I also have a podcast. It's called Voice of the Vortex. And it seemed like a good idea at the time... ^_^;

Ever sampled Cort and Fatboy? All sorts of geekery, quite a bit of it Portland-centered but also tackling more wide-reaching geek subjects. In fact, I hope to hear non-Portlanders' reactions to the show. Good idea to try starting with a Friday episode (where Mike "Culture Pulp" Russell talks about movies) or a Monday episode (with local comic book fan/ expert/ now writer Aaron "Geek in the City" Duran, who podcasts as well on his site). Thursdays, fair warning if you do try Cort and Fatboy, can be pretty over-the-top, intense and crazy, but that's all I'll say about that.

They podcast for Cascadia.fm, which has a still-growing line-up of shows covering a bunch of interests (video games, soccer, technology, knitting, miscellaneous geek stuff). Maybe take a look at what's offered. And I told you before about some of the shows Dawn Taylor's on, Legion of News (with Rick Emerson) and Ham-Fisted Radio (also with Fatboy). Those two are on Cascadia.fm.

The New Yorker Fiction Podcast is really good, if frequently depressing.

The Gearheart is an adventure tale that's genre-blending (steampunk and fantasy, to name two), over-the-top, and a lot of fun. Worth checking out.
