A safe bet

Michael Vick's book tour has been cancelled because of death threats against him over his dogfighting ring.

I'm not going to pretend to have much sympathy here, given my general dislike for animal abusers, although I'm also disinclined to condone the death threats themselves.

That said, does anyone believe that if Kobe Bryant or Ben Roethlisberger wrote a book, that there'd be anything approaching the same reaction to their book tours? Ditto arena shows by Chris Brown or movie premieres featuring Sean Penn?

(Enlighten me on the Sean Penn bit. I was aware that he had a reputation as a generally unpleasant fellow, but the specifics elude me.)

I had to look it up myself, but: he was physically abusive to Madonna while they were married in the 1980s. Including one case where she needed skull x-rays after he hit her with a baseball bat.

Penn's had a reputation as a violent drunk for decades. He's been to jail for punching out paparazzi at least twice.

Penn beat Madonna in the head with a baseball bat when they were married. But he won two Oscars, so it all doesn't matter, I guess.

Oh, dear gods. I knew he was a piece of work but somehow I missed the highlights. That's one more Hollywood heavy hitter who never gets another entertainment dollar from me again.

Heaven help me if I ever meet any of these people. I don't know how I could manage to hide my contempt long enough to make a safe exit.
