Oh, please.

"Doctor" Richard Swier is claiming that Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak is child porn.

I'm just going to quote John Cleese here: "I think the problem with people like this is that they are so stupid that they have no idea how stupid they are. You see, if you are very, very stupid how can you possibly realize that you’re very, very stupid."

(This is, incidentally, the reason that no one debates the sci-fi writer known as Venereal Disease; he's simply too unintelligent to understand when he's wrong, and is thus incapable of ever walking away without thinking he's been brilliant.)

Somehow, trying to prevent students from reading Speak strikes me as missing the point entirely...

"Pissed" is graphic language? Reminds me of my 9th grade art teacher who almost wrote me up for using "that sucks".

Why oh why does it not surprise me that this is in Florida? Why?

On another note, if they think that "bitch" and "asshole" and "pissed" (seriously??) are words too strong for middle school kids, I've got news for them. They should stand around a schoolyard some day and listen to all the colorful language that these kids already use. Their little ears would curl up and fall off their heads.
I have to agree with John Cleese on this one. Very, very stupid people.
