Not that Wikipedia's ever a reliable source, but "In 1967, author MacDonald refused permission for a television series about Travis McGee and his cases, feeling people would stop reading the novels were Travis McGee regularly on television."

Twenty years later, Robert B. Parker had clearly figured out that wasn't a concern.

(I worry that people have basically forgotten about McGee these days. Which is a crying shame.)

I sell somewhere between ten and fifty McGee novels every month. No lie.

Handselling is the key.

I love Travis McGee, and I let any customer in earshot know it.

I just discovered those books this last year. (Benefit of breaking my leg - having 100% uninterrupted time to just sit and read read read read read.)

Any writer with a brain would know that wasn't a concern. Seriously, any TV show or movie based on a book series increases sales of the book series, sometimes by several quantum leaps......

I'll take Travis McGee over Parker any day of the week.

I love McGee and have been thinking of him a great deal just lately. I seriously need to reread the series but will have to re-acquire it because mine have all disappeared between two moves.

Have you read The Good Old Stuff short story collections? I really wish he'd written more about Park Falkner. I dream of a crossover with McGee and Falkner.

Funny actually, I know about Travis via Spider Robinson, and only just recently acquired a box set of the books. Now there's a Tv series in the works? I guess it's a good time to get into it.
