Because it's a holiday-shortened week, so who needs ten, right?

1. Karen Gillan will star in a sitcom pilot from Emily Kapnek, the creator of Suburgatory. I'm there. And given that the other show Kapnek created is As Told By Ginger, I'm starting to wonder if Kapnek's obsessed with redheads.

2. This Onion Video piece captures how I use Netflix 90% of the time. (Warning: The Onion obnoxiously not only autoplays, but flows from one video to the next.)

3. I need to visit New Orleans solely for this creation. It might be the last thing I do, as it's probably the pufferfish of hamburgers, causing heart attacks immediately in a certain percentage of people.

4. Jaywalking: How the car industry outlawed crossing the road. 'nuff said.

5. Are Model Railways a Form of Fanfic? BTW, if I ever win the lottery, one of the things I'll have is a basement with a Gomez Addams-esque model railway setup.

My father's always been really into trains, model and real. I was never that into them myself, but went along with him a few times to various conventions in the area. What really sticks in my mind mostly is these goofy funny train fan films (and this being the late 70's early 80's, I mean film) that would be shown in a small room at each convention.

My dad is a serious train buff [the sort of person who even the anorak lot regard as a bit nerdy.], and I'm sort of rather into fandom...

you know, I wonder if there's such a thing as a 'fan' gene? I mean, I get it from my dad maybe, but my mum not so much, so I'm only a mild fan.. but my daughter gets it from me and her mum, and she's pretty heavily into fandom... not a single allele inheritance pattern but it could be a multiple close-linked genes.

They had fandoms for medieval knights, Roman gladiators and possibly neolithic hunters [which is is one interpretation of cave paintings.]

I don't think there's ever been a time when humanity didn't have some sort of fandom...

Although, now that I think of it... religion could be viewed as a fandom, in which it probably pre-dates modern humans.

If you have even the slightest interest in Regency romance, I highly recommend Tessa Dare's new novel, Romancing the Duke, which includes a really splendid depiction of Regency-era fandom (complete with cosplay). It also has at least one Reddit in-joke. I love her work so much.

If I were to pull a Gomez Addams, my train layout would be made of LEGO. (AWESOME!)

The genre has its flaws, no question, but Dare is very skilled at dodging them. See also: the works of Courtney Milan.

Lego had a train system for a while, although I never picked them up and haven't seen any recently. Doesn't seem to be in their current lineup either, although Mindstorm could replicate it for the enterprising.
