So is there a correlation between lack of sleep and depression? Right now, and for pretty much all of the day, I've been in an unbearable funk. And although I'm certainly not in general a chipper person, I'm also not clinically depressive.

The last few times I felt like this, it was because something royally sucky had either happened, or was about to. I really hope this is sleep-related.

Most likely sleep-deprived. Do something to up your seratonin levels like sleep or rumpypumpy or chocolate. Or, for fun, try them in reverse order, repeat. :D

Well, it definately does funky things with my mood, because I get super chipper, which never in a million years should be part of me, for about 50% of the day when I've had less than 5 hours of sleep, and I'm a total bitch for the other half. Which means that cleaning the appartment today should be oodles of fun, seeing how annoyed I get at my roommate in the best of cleaning circumstances.

Yes, there is such a correlation. Usually it's traced the other way around; you become depressed and it interferes with your sleep patterns, but I don't see any reason why it couldn't work this way too.
