So, just two days after [livejournal.com profile] technomom mentioned the Liaden books (which I'd never heard of), they got brought up again on the Dragaera listserv. I suspect I'm going to have to hunt them down. Although I'm inclined to try to find the originals, as Meisha Merlin is likely to render them unreadable.

The originals have been out of print for a very long time. The Meisha Merlin ones really aren't that tough. Start with the omnibus edition of the first three books, Partners in Necessity, but you'll want to have Plan B and I Dare on hand (plots move quickly between those). I'd loan you our copiesy, but I think they're on loan elsewhere at the moment. The whole series is defitely on the short list of books we for which we need multiple copies.

I seem to recall that there are Ace editions of some of the books coming out, too, but I don't think they've gone all the way back to the first trilogy.

Oh - Pilot's Choice is a two-volume omnibus of Local Custom and <Scout's Progress</U. Those two books take place one generation before Partners in Necessity, but I don't think I'd start with them. I'm sure both of those are out in Ace editions.

I hope B&N has the books in stock so you can use the gift card. Borders frequently doesn't have them, although they say they can get them (takes a ridiculous amount of time, though). SF & Mystery Bookshop always has copies on the shelves - makes sense as Stephe Pagel used to work there (might still work there, although I haven't seen him there in a while).

I didn't realize SF&M was non-Marta accessible. But I don't much like the location either. It is easier to park there than their old location in the Virginia-Highlands area, but I'm not nearly as comfortable with the neighborhood.

I am of the opinion that it's their location that is causing them to go out of business. It's a wierd neighborhood, and there's not much in the way of retail establishments to draw walk-ins. They need to find a strip mall in the subs or something to get better business. People aren't going to go out of their way to find them enough to keep them in business, and they aren't open when the shiny gothy people are heading over to the chamber. They really aren't open when the horny people are heading to velvet heavan. I guess they might maybe get a walk in from the doggy people going to barking hounds. I don't know anything else in the neighborhood.
