Okay, I knew I was out of practice. It's been years since I've played softball. But although I knew I was out of shape, I didn't realize how bad things were.

Today was the first day I could make the intramural league (I'd missed our first two games). I got there at 5:30, and the four of us who were there took infield practice. By the end, I was already schvitzing. I was at second, and I got the hang of fielding and catching, but my throwing is still way off -- I messed up my thumb a few weeks ago when I slept on it, and although it doesn't affect much, it caused me to palm the ball (especially when I rush the throw).

I was on the bench to start the game, but Dr. Roth pulled a hamstring early on, so I had to pinch run (sort of like asking a blind man to pinch-read). I managed to score, and then had to play the field. Fortunately, during the entire rest of the game, I only had to deal with a pop fly, and some force outs at second, since their entire team was right-handed.

At the plate, I managed to go 2-3 (two singles and a line-out), but sprinting was painful. My legs hurt. A lot. to the point where I can't sit all the way down, because standing is nothing but agony.

And I was thirsty. It was hot and humid on the field, and I had nothing to drink. I gulped at least ten glasses of water as soon as I got home.

I wasn't hungry, but I knew that I needed something -- hadn't had anything since lunch -- so I mixed a can of corn and a can or Ro-Tel tomatoes and cilantro and had some salsa, followed by one of Elayna's ice pops and some excedrin.

So I still hurt, but I'm not dehydrated anymore.

We've got another game scheduled on Wednesday. I really hope I'm in better shape then. :-(

Dude, I can so relate to what you're going through. I had to run for the phone at work tonight from one end of the building to the other, and I thought I was gonna lose a lung. I think it's time to start looking around for young, healthy organ donors. Mwahahahaha!

AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Eat your cake and HAVE it, too. That expression drives me round the bend.

I would consider this softball experience a wake up call from your heart! :P

I get to be smug now, since my softball game is pretty good. At least, if I'm not striking out.

I want a jetsons machine to exercise me while I sit on my butt at my computer. The only thing staving off total physical condition meltdown is the walk to and from marta, and baby-walking.

Pre and post leg stretching, man. Actually, stretch out the entire body. Helps with the aches as well as the possibility of popping a hamstring.

Heh. And just in case you needed further motivation: there was only one time in my glorious sporting career where I didn't do the pre-exercise stretching, and that was for a softball game, and I wound up popping my hamstring that day. Ghod that sucked.
