As if all the books coming out -- new ones by Hiaassen, de Lint, Barker, and countless other favorite authors -- weren't enough, here's this, from the latest Dreamhaven catalog:
Kushner, Ellen and Delia Sherman - The Fall of Kings 1st Ed. Trade PB
(Bantam Spectra 2002) Set in the world of "Swordspoint" 50 years later.
Young history master Basil St. Cloud is fascinated by the ancient kings,
now long deposed. Popular belief holds that the early kings were corrupt,
and the wizards who guided them charlatans. But Basil has a different
theory. He believes that they were guided by a true magic that sustained
the land. And he isn't alone. A secret royalist movement is growing,
demanding the return of the ancient rituals. And when Basil falls in love
with a descendant of the royal line, he finds himself caught up in events
that are far beyond his control, as he hears the land cry out for its
ancient magics to be restored. Signed copies available in early November.
$13.95
*sigh* Add one more to the "must buy" list. Ellen Kushner novels do not appear nearly often enough.

Date: 2002-10-01 06:40 am (UTC)I was kind of disappointed with "Swordspoint," though. Found it dry and unmemorable, which made me sad, because I'd really adored "Thomas The Rhymer." But then "Swordspoint" was her first novel, wasn't it? If she's made the kind of stylistic leap between books 2 and 3 that she made between 1 and 2, well then damn, this'll be the best book of the year.

But yeah, if she improves as much as she did last time, stylistically, this will really kick ass. She's a writer who really needs to write more.

Date: 2002-10-01 07:08 pm (UTC)Firstly, I read Thomas the Rhymer first, and frankly, hated it. I loooove retold ballads. Love love loooove them. Adore them. Okay, so I didn't hate TtR, but really wasn't impressed. It was just ... blah.
I adooooooooored Swordspoint. Loooove loove loved it. (Erm, it has been a long day. Forgive me please.) I've read it multiple times. Had a random brain fart story that was totally influenced by it (and therefore never shown to anyone.) Loved it.
I knew Ms Kushner had a new book coming out, as I keep abreast of fave authors as best as I am able. But NO ONE TOLD ME IT WAS SET IN SWORDSPOINT'S WORLD.
:: does happy happy dance!! :: I am so very very very thrilled. Thank you for distributing this happy happy info!
Wonder if it'll be out before I quit my job and lose my discount. Heh.
