(no subject)

So, Elayna, being sick and all, crashed on the couch a little bit before seven. I carried her into her room, and we put her to bed (she had been wearing a soft dress anyway, so it was as if she was in a nightgown).

Flash forward to a bit after 10. shadesong and I are watching X-Men: Evolution on the Tivo, and Elayna wanders out.

"Good Morning," she mumbles.

Heh. The pook thought she'd slept the whole night through. As if we'd ever be awake before her. We explained what happened, got her into a nightshirt, had her take some more cough medicine (which she was not enthused about), and got her tucked back in.

Silly kid.

Shortly after Shadesong went to bed, I figured I'd watch just a little Tivo, then head to sleep. That was three hours ago. Because I had to watch both Scrubs that we had. And then last week's Angel. And then it turned out that Tivo is playing the BMW "Hire" movies, so I watched the John Woo one that it had downloaded. If I thought I could stay awake for it, I'd hit the three Gilmore Girls (two classic and one new), but I think even I have my limits. A few more minutes of web browsing, and I'm off to bed.

Baron and I watched "The Hostage" as well. It beat the hell out of the damn Cheryl Crow video. If my TIVO is going to download things I don't ask it to, at least they can be interesting.

I didn't mind the Sheryl Crow stuff too much -- it was nifty as a proof of concept, if nothing else. It seems like it's downloading stuff all the time now, though. We've got football stuff, The Hire, movie previews, and other random stuff appearing each day. As long as it doesn't block my real stuff from getting recorded, I guess it's okay.

You mean it's recording things you haven't asked it to?

Sort of. Tivo has, for a while, used extra space (it never blocks out shows you want to record) to download things like music previews (they teamed with Sheryl Crow to download her last video before it was on MTV), movie clips (most recently "8 Mile"), and now the BMW "Hire" series. It's a nifty idea, only really limited by however much phone time it takes to download.

And, of course, it always records "suggestions" to fill extra space.

Now I'm thinking I must not know how TiVo even works. I thought its input came from your dish or cable.

Oh, most of the input comes that way. But it has to phone in to the Tivo database to download updated schedules. This is also when it downloads added content.

Does it do that DSL-style, or do you have to be off the phone when it does it?

Off the phone (but it won't pick up if you're on the phone, and it'll hang up if you pick up).
