Embarrassing literary admission of the day: I constantly confuse Robert and Ian Rankin.

I can never remember which one writes crime, which writes sci-fi, and which one just sings with his siblings.

When I first saw an Ian Rankin book in a local shop, my initial reactions were, "Oh, he's finally getting published on this side of the pond," and "when did he start writing mysteries?"

Just think of him as Wobert Wankin. Solves the problem for me, and incidentally conveys my opinion of his writing.

(I'm somewhat biased against the man - for some unknown reason, he's very popular in Irish fandom, and I so don't get him. But continued exposure to fanzines, fans, etc is making me bitter.)

I read one of the apocolypse books back in the summer of '91 when I was last over there. It was the same time I read Good Omens, so I always assumed that I was merely unfavorably comparing the one to the other. I never read any of the others, but I don't remember hating it -- it was just fluff. I know that ariadnesthread is a huge fan, and I've been meaning to try to find more of his as the need to import Pratchett and Jon Courtnay Grimwood novels wanes. Now I'm not as certain.

Don't let me bias you against him. :) I'm sure we have a few books knocking around the house - mail me your postal address (I have it on file somewhere, but finding it could take months) and I'll parcel them up and send them over. That way you can try them without any hassle finding them.
