So, [livejournal.com profile] shadesong just went out for a walk, and took with her the new Tom Waits CD that [livejournal.com profile] murnkay got her. She'd never heard Waits, in spite of hearing all sorts of good things about him from me and [livejournal.com profile] murnkay and others. Five m inutes later, she returned, saying, "never mind, this sucks."

Sigh.

Some people don't appreciate genius.

I suggested she listen to some Leonard Cohen instead, and she got a horrified expression on her face and said, "Dear god, no!"

Feh.

I'll listen t o the good stuff, and she can live in ignorance of the geniuses.µ∫

Clarification:

I love music.

What I heard of that CD isn't music. It's pretentiously-intoned spoken-word with the standard mournful saxophone.

I appreciate that he may be a great writer, but there's no music there.

Going to listen to Flogging Molly to clean my brain...

Yah but she directly insulted Tom. Said it wasn't MUSIC! That's like ... I mean ... you can not like Lennon but you need to admit he was amazing at what he did. Waits is an amazing songwriter and musician.

99% of the time I can cope when someone doesn't like things I do. Different tastes are GOOD, they show me new things. I enjoy it and like being told that something I like isn't good "because".

But Waits? He's a Diety out there man. It's like saying HST can't write worth a damn. Well ... at least you can enjoy the CD then :)

I'll get over this ... but ... Wow. hehehe

Not gonna give proper respect to Lennon either huh? What IS the world coming to?

And yeah, more tom is NOT a bad thing. I should burn you my Tom Odd's and End's collection. His Disney song, some live stuff, not all of it GREAT quality recordings but all really rare and wierd. If it isn't around by end of Jan, REMIND me ok?

Well, obviously she's wrong about Cohen. But she is soooo right about Waits!

Honey... it *isn't* music. It's spoken word. With a sax as backdrop. And I did say that he may be a great writer. But.... it isn't *music*.

Remember this: Before I was ever anything else, I was a dancer. I have very deep feelings about music. Spoken word is nice, but... it is not music. Music is wild primal beauty. This is some guy talking.

It is music. It isn't spoken word. Oh sure some of it is... yes. He does do some spoken storytelling. But it is music. It is in fact, jazz. It may not be a type of music you like, that is your choice not anyone elses, but it is very much music as composed by a master songwriter.

Which Tom Waits album was it?

Wild primal beauty, courtesy of Tom Waits (and yes, these are all music, not spoken word):

"Rain Dogs"
"Hang On, St. Christopher"
"Earth Died Screaming"
"Romeo Is Bleeding"
"Whistling Past the Graveyard"
"Blue Valentines"
"Filipino Box Spring Hog"
"Black Market Baby"
"Black Wings"
"I'm Still Here"
"Fish & Bird"
"Time" (which was covered by Tori)

I'm willing to say that Tom Waits is a difficult artist at times; some of his stuff can be downright inaccessible. But he's, to me, the definition of wild primal beauty. I'd recommend giving him another listen; I don't know what album Murnkay gave you, but try "Rain Dogs" if you can borrow a copy from someone.

Will address the rest when I have more time... but, speaking of "Time", I didn't like it when Tori did it, either... Monkey gave me "Small Change".

Well, it's not like you didn't already know she has poor taste in some areas. My understanding is she thinks Peter David is a good writer, and Tolkien a bad one, for example.
