Happy Wednesday
Jan. 22nd, 2003 09:17 amWhich I won't call by it's usual nickname*
Anyway, got two hours of sleep last night. Am imbibing coffee like it's water. Brown, bitter water with some milk and sugar. But water nonetheless.
Read a bunch of comics, thanks to Westfield. Anyone not reading The Hulk is not only missing out on a great storyline, but also some of the niftiest covers (thanks to Kaare Andrews). The latest issue is a wonderful twist on Where the Wild Things Are.
Exiles, on the other hand, has covers that literally have nothing to do with the story, and are pure random filler. Not that I mind looking at the alternate female Sunfire, but it would mean something more if she actually did anything in the story itself.
We're also planning on cutting back on our comics ordering. We spend a shitload of money on comics, and we can afford to wait for graphic novels on a lot of the books we read, and we can afford to hold off on buying some graphic novels when they come out (especially thanks to things like the Amazon wishlist and their 30% discount on many of the books).
Other items on the agenda today include meetings, tons of work, and initiating mail fraud charges against an out-of-state comics dealer who ripped me off for $140. Which, last I checked, is a felony.
Looking forward to January ending. It's an exhausting month. Always is. February is nice and short. And has fun things, like the Girl Scout Father/Daughter Dance I get to go to with Elayna (we had a blast at it last year), a lull between major work projects, and good tv. So yeah, February good.
Speaking of Elayna, for those who are wondering, she's really adjusting well to being in the pre-teen (instead of the Junior) class. Having kids who are older, taller, and more mature than her gives her people to look up to. The added structure is a bonus, too. In the old class, she could get away with a lot more acting up. Here, with sixteen kids, most of them yellow belts or higher, and all but two older than her, if she's ever the center of attention, it's either going to get her in trouble, or it's because she's helping lead an example. She's had one or two instances of the former, and has quickly learned to appreciate the latter instead. Disrupting a class of people who actually want to be there (as opposed to three five- and six-year olds, who are just goofing around), is a different story.
And yesterday, I watched her as she practiced grappling. The first two times, she was paired with partners near her height and age (there's a blue belt boy who's her height, surprisingly, and a blue-belt girl who's taller than her, but her age), and they were mostly evenly matched. But then she was paired with a ten-year-old green belt girl who's a foot and a half taller than her. And she got taken down three times quickly by foot sweeps. But the girl showed her how to do the footsweep, and Elayna was able to take the girl down with it. It's something that could never have happened in the other class.
Anyway, work beckons (and has beckoned so often that these few words have taken an hour to write). So does sleep, but I'm telling it to krunk off until tonight.
*You know Newbie, it's so interesting, I found I couldn't sleep last night so in order to past the time I started to make a list of things that annoy me more than you. Anyway, I came up with people who call Wednesdays "hump day" and of course all Sandra Bullock movies but now I am thrilled to announce your brother tops the list." -- Dr. Cox, Scrubs
