Our Westfield order
Jan. 24th, 2003 01:15 pmAs always, here's our Westfield order (turned in yesterday, the last possible day to do so, because we needed money), complete with commentary:
As I mentioned before, we're trying to really cut back on our comic expenses (he says, prefacing a list that ends up at well over $125). So we're doing a few things. We're cutting back drastically on some books (sorry, Rick Veitch is damned talented, but his Aquaman is pretty fucking uncompelling). For any book that we know will be collected (the current slate of Grendel reprints, to use one example), we're holding off for the collection, unless we're just completely hooked (we're weaning ourselves on this one). And we're not buying every graphic novel the second the announcements are made. If it's DC, Marvel, Crossgen, even Oni, we can add them to the wishlist at Amazon, and buy them when we're not having money issues (or even hope someone else will splurge). And they'll often as not be cheaper that way. That's why you won't see the next Hopeless Savages GN on here, or the new printing of the Korvac Saga. Ditto
shadesong's manga titles. Also, at least four books on the list are ending within the next couple of months. Those are in bold. No point in even considering dropping those books this late in the game. We'll be evaluating some of the others this month.
Birds of Prey 53
Still by Beto, so I'm still buying it. I can't believe a series I have disdained for so many years has been on my pull list for something like eight months running now.
H-E-R-O 2
My nostalgia button gets pushed by the very existence of this series. I loved the reprints in Adventure when I was a kid. And I've liked what I've seen of Will Pfeiffer's stuff (although I've never seen him with an artist other than Jill Thompson).
Looney Tunes 100
For Elayna. In theory. This issue has a whole bunch of guest artists and tributes. DC has quietly done some nifty stuff with their WB line -- the PowerPuff comic is as sharp as the tv show, and the other books are also lots of fun.
Powerpuff Girls 36
See above. :-)
Supergirl 80
Young Justice 55
Blood and Water 1
Sounds okay, but Judd Winick and Vertigo is a match I'm always willing to try.
Codename: Knockout 22
Fables 11
One we probably need to cut back on, since it's being collected, but I adore Willingham's work, and I lack patience.
Sandman Presents: Bast 3
Zatanna: Everyday Magic
Paul Dini. 'nuff said.
Global Frequency 6
Reload 1
Both Warren Ellis. Again, 'nuff said.
Amazing Spider-Man 51
I'm halfway losing interest, as JMS's weaknesses become more apparent in comics than they ever were on TV, but I keep vowing to give him time. Don't even mention his Squadron Supreme stuff to me, though.
Captain Marvel 7
I decided long ago, Bill and Joe.
Daredevil 45
Fantastic Four 67
Incredible Hulk 51
X-Men: Ronin Set (#1 & 2)
I have no love for the Marvel Mangaverse, but J Torres is nifty.
Alias Set (#20 & 21)
Exiles Set (#23 & 24)
Ultimate Spider-Man Set (#37 & 38)
Mekaniks 6
Peter Parker, Spider-Man 54
X-Statix 9
Another one that's losing steam. But Milligan has come up with some interesting ideas for this series (his first interesting ideas since Shade, imho), and I'm willing to keep giving it a chance for a bit.
Crossovers 3
Mythstalkers 1
Powers 30
I know that the last of these will be collected. But I enjoy the Powers letter cols as much as anything else I read.
PvP 1
Terry Moore's Paradise Too 12
Babyhead Magazine 2
Gloom Cookie 15
Fallen 1
Soulsearchers 59
Nodwick 20
PS238 1
Finally! A real story, after a zillion previews.
Supernatural Law 37
Love & Rockets Vol. 2 7
Jane's World 3
Boneyard Special Swimsuit Issue
I can't believe I'm buying a swimsuit issue of a comic. But I suspect this will be slightly more fun than most of the genre.
How Loathsome 1
Courtney Crumrin & the Coven of Mystics
Days Like This (tpb)
Amelia Rules 10
I keep saying it, but it never grows old. This is the best comic out there right now. Buy it. It's all ages, funny, and each issue stands alone.
Wizard (Michael Turner cover) 139
This is all
shadesong; I think I've already expressed my opinion on this rag ages ago. But Amazon offers a subscription deal for the magazine for $28, which is way cheaper than even our discount at Westfield. So this will be the last month we're ordering it.
Anyway, that's our orders for this month. Significantly cheaper than last month, still too much money. The goal next month is to get under $100.

Date: 2003-01-24 10:26 am (UTC)Dunno if I told you, but I've finally started reading (and loving!) Powers -- proof that all you have to do to get me to buy something is mention Homicide. (Joe insisted it was "Homicide with superheroes" -- which, actually, is also Top Ten.)
