So, Rich Gannon, NFL MVP, throws six interceptions.

It's okay.

Everyone knows that whenever a Raider pass is intercepted, an Angel gets his wings.

Anyway, other Super Bowl thoughts:

The ads:

Well, for movies alone, it was worth it. Charlie's Angels 2, Matrix Reloaded, The Hulk, Daredevil (all with ad featuring fast cuts and techno music). All ads I was anticipating, and enjoyed.

Liked the Monster.Com ad with the truck, and most of the beer commercials (the usual correlation between shitty beer and good ads standing firm). The Willie Nelson ad was nifty, and the Pepsi Osbornes one was cute, as well. The Micky D's was uninteresting, and the ABC promos were either interesting but played to death (most of the Monday lineup, other than the Practice, which couldn't get better by moving to a new night any more than dogshit could smell better by moving to a new curb), or for shows that were so horrendously offensive, I've glad they only aired once (the "celebrity" show with non-celeb Melissa Rivers, the Dianne Sawyer Throws Away Even More Dignity on useless non-celeb Lisa Marie Presley Jackson Cage, and "Am I Sexy").

My favorite, though, was the Visa Checkcard with Yao and Yogi. Between this and the latest Powerbook commercials, Yao is doing some fine off-the-court work.

What really disappointed me was the lack of anything (other than the Charlie's Angels promo) in the second half. Back when I first started watching the SuperBowl, thee were good commercials throughout. Hell, the Bud Bowl literally ran for the entire game. Now, after half-time, why bother? Such a waste.

The Half-Time Show:

Well, I watched two thirds of it, which says something. I hit mute for Shania, of course. Does anyone actually listen to her stuff because they like it? I've always assumed that the only reason anyone listens to her is that they harbor a secret hope that Shania will somehow find out that they listened to the song, and she'll be so thankful, she'll fly to their house for a night of wild sex. Really, it's the only explanation that makes sense.

But No Doubt gave a great (and, unlike Shania, live) performance, even though I wouldn't have minded a more recent song. Gwen Stefani is amazingly gorgeous and talented, and the band still sounds great. And they looked like they were genuinely having fun.

As for Sting, I've never made a secret of the fact that I consider Solo Sting to be about as uninteresting as AfterM*A*S*H was. So hearing him do a Police song, and do it right, was very nice. No Doubt may be the only band capable of backing Sting on this song, assuming that there will never be a Police reunion.

And needless to say, I'm damned happy that the jam was only No Doubt and Sting (no Shania). I still have horrible flashbacks to Britney belting out "Walk this Way" a couple of years ago. *shudder*

The Game:

What can I say? A Raiders loss is almost as nice as a Dolphins loss. And seeing them dismantled is just a thing of beauty. Hell, seeing a team defensive performance like that, period, is a thing of beauty. This was just a solid game for the Bucs. And after watching them be underdogs for so long, it's nice to see them finally take it all the way.

That said, ABC had some serious issues. There were some great plays -- like the awesome job the Bucs special teams did squelching a couple of kickoff returns -- and some controversial ones (including a pass interference) that were never replayed. and Madden seems less and less intelligent and insightful each year. Not to mention the technical difficulties they had at a few points.

Crap. It's after 11 already. I'm running on three hours of sleep and tons of caffeine, which is wearing off. Guess I'll save the other posts I wanted to make until tomorrow.

HA!!

I concur with all your comments. I missed most of the first half, so I missed all the good commercials. Yao's going to be huge -- he's just got a natural charm that most big athletes lack these days. My buddy Rick and I took the "Am I Hot" ad as the end of American civilization, or what passed for it, anyway. We identified Shania as lip-synching and mocked her heavily. Gwen was fabulous, as always. If I could be a rock star, I'd probably pick Gwen.

On Shania: When she was singing (?) "I Feel Like a Woman," I took one look and said, "But you look like an idiot." One of the stupidest outfits, ever.

And I know for a fact that your theory is true of the one Shania fan I've met. Totally accurate.

I once read an Steve Earle interview in which he called Shania "the highest-paid lap dancer in Nashville." *g*

Heh. Well, she's sure not a singer! I just don't get the (musical) appeal.

How about all the teasers for the "jimmy Kimmel show" that won't be aired at all in the Atlanta market?

I liked the best the very first song of hers that I heard, which was years and years and years ago, and the album didn't do very well, so they decided to have her wear less.
