You know, I don't even like Sailor Moon, but this sounds like a helluva release. All tv shows that get mangled on TV should get treated this well:

April 17, 2003

ADV Films is set to release the uncut first season of the classic anime series Sailor Moon on July 15, 2003.  This DVD-only release includes all 46 episodes on eight disks.  Each episode will be presented in the original Japanese with English subtitles.  The DVDs come in two 4-disc cases, which are contained in a high quality, foil-stamped, custom art box.  The Season One Collection has a running time of 1060 minutes and a suggested retail price of $149.98.

The new ADV collection will have an age rating of 15+, which should provide some indication of the amount of censorship in the Americanized version of Sailor Moon, which original U.S. rights holder DIC bowdlerized for U.S. TV audiences.  DIC's cuts were far more extensive than just covering up the subtle nudity of transformation scenes.  Six episodes were cut out entirely and two others (#45 and #46) were combined into one.  The original music and opening sequences were redone by DIC, which also censored violence, adolescent romance, and the story's gender-bending and homosexual elements.  The final episode with its unflinching acceptance of death as a necessary possible consequence of a righteous fight was particularly hard hit by DIC's transformation of the series into a U.S. children's release.

No kidding. I wish to hell they would do this with Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman (currently available only from Rhino bundled in with the Americanized version "Battle of the Planets").

cheers,
Phil

This could actually get me interested in Sailor Moon again, sadly enough. I sorta liked it for a while, although it seemed very watered down and "silly", when it was on constant repeat on Cartoon Network. Then I got the movies on DVD, and realized just *HOW BADLY* that it had been farked up. (Running the English soundtrack with English subtitles is really a great way to see how much some stuff changes.) The thing took on an entire new (and deeper) meaning in Japanese - and the movies were by Pioneer, who tend to be truer to the original with their English dubs.

Combined with the Gundam Wing debut, which *proved* that anime could be brought here without screwing around with it, I pretty much haven't watched SM (heh) since. I guess the DIC/Funmation contract is finally up, so ADV can correct the long-standing travesty now.

Have a link for this? I have a couple of friends who'd love to know about it.
