A memory

Inspired by a post by [livejournal.com profile] onceupon.

When I was a sophomore in college, I worked at the Ronkin Educational Group, a second-rate Kaplan-style corporation. Their office was in the Virginia Highlands area of Atlanta, and I walked there, usually about 45-minutes or so from the Emory campus. It was my first job (not counting being a camp counselor, which is a "job" in the same way that being a lab rat is "science."

On Saturdays, I was usually the only one in the office, as they didn't do any actual testing or coursework, and my only job was to call folks who had asked for more info to set up evaluation tests, and to do paperwork.

One Friday night, I woke up very briefly at about four in the morning to a huge thunderstorm outside. Went right back to sleep. Woke up again at 8 when the phone rang. It was my boss, telling me that the power was out at the office, so I needn't bother coming in. I chatted with her for a few minutes, then went back to sleep.

I woke up for real at eleven, grabbed a quick shower, and set off for the office, having no memory of the conversation. As I reached the Highlands, I started to remember the chat, but I thought it might just have been a dream. I got to the office, and found everything working, so I wrote off that conversation as a dream, and got to work.

Right before closing, I got a call from my boss, who was surprised when I picked up the phone. She reminded me of the conversation from that morning. Turns out it wasn't a dream. The power had been restored in the strip mall ahead of schedule. I had to stumble and try to explain to my boss that I'd been dead asleep, and honestly hadn't remembered the conversation. She seemed more amused than anything else, fortunately.

If it is fine with you, I have added you as a friend. I think it will make my days a little moor cheerful to hear you talk about your relationship with Elayna.

Greetings.
