Well, yeah, if you think I'm not going to mourn Les Maddox, I'm sure as hell not going to mourn this hatemongering prick.

That said, I'm not doing a tap-dance over his death, either.

Why?

Because the asshole lived to be over 100. He foisted his unique brand of hatred and ignorance on the world for over a hundred years. Imagine if the end of Burton's Batman movie featured The Joker getting away. And Batman turning to Commissioner Gordon and saying, "It's okay. In fifty years or so, he'll be dead of old age." Yeah. That would've been real satisfying, right?

Thurmond made Nicholson's Joker look like a fine, upstanding citizen. Hell, The Joker was more grounded and sane.

So yeah, of course I'm glad that the son of a bitch is dead. And I wish I believed in Hell, just so could be assured that the scumsucker was getting his just desserts. But as it stands, he had his chance to fuck the world and the US up the ass for years, and pretty much got away with it cleanly. The man deserved to die a protracted, painful death fifty years ago.

Now, what are the odds that Jesse Helms will kill himself now that his soulmate is gone?

[livejournal.com profile] rollick's post over here is the funniest one I've read on the subject of Strom, by the way.

I may be a registered Republican, but I'm not at all sorry Thurmond's gone (I wish he'd left the Senate many years ago). That said, I'd be ecstatic if Byrd left office. He's got some really lovely skeletons in his background, too, from what I've read.

And lest anyone think all Republicans are backwards, freedom-hating homophobes, I very strongly support the Supreme Court decision about the Texas anti-sodomy law. I believe in personal rights and freedoms, and I think the government has no business legislating what consenting adults do with each other in private. It royally pisses me off that the only noisy Republicans on the topic are the Christian-right, Moral Majority types. Most Reps out there are moderates these days. Really, they are.

Argh! You get this idea of Jesse and Strom secretly being gay lovers out of my head RIGHT NOW! *shudder*

Thurmond has only himself to blame for his death. He shouldn't have said "They'll legalize gay sex over my dead body"...

Oh-ho. I knew SOMEONE was pimping me out, due to the random comments I was getting on that post… Thankee for the nod. I'll pass it on to Cass, who earned it.

…Odd. Maybe someone on your friends list who isn't on mine pimped me out as a result of your post, and friends of theirs who aren't on your list are coming over? Or maybe more people use the friends-of-friends function than I realize, and that post just prompted a couple of people to comment. Who knows.

Heh, one of my list friends took me to task for a milder version of your post.(I shrugged it off).

Should I point her your way for a real obit?

Thanks for adding me to your friend's list. Strom might have been a product of his own time (chances are that his father or immediate family member owned slaves), but he should've gotten out of politics a long time ago. I don't even know how useful he could've been to his constituents at 100 anymore.
