Freddy vs Jason

yendiOverall verdict: It was a fun flick. Some great in-jokes, some nice kills, some great fights. Not the best film in either series, but worth seeing, nonetheless. Alas, the Jason from this flick can't hold a candle to Kane Hodder. This guy just didn't have the same presence. On to the spoilers
The opening voice-over was cheesy. I know it was needed to set the stage, but it was still weak.
I am glad they went with this plot, instead of the rumored one with survivors of other movies. I'm also glad they acknowledged most of the other movies (not counting the most recent in each series, of course).
Jason was definitely the star here. Freddy only got two extended sequences (and didn't technically get the kill in either of them), although his only real kill was quite stylish. They made it clear pretty early on that Jason was the "good" guy of the two. They highlighted Freddy's child-killing ways (especially the fact that, unlike Jason, he killed pre-teens), and Jason's first two on-screen kills (not counting the sequence in Hell) were of decidedly "bad" kids. In fact, until he murdered Kelly Rowland and the nerdy kid (who was almost an accident) at the end, everyone he killed was a classic slasher victim -- sex, drugs, alcohol, even (for the first time I can recall) tobacco.
You've also gotta love seeing Jason cut loose at a rave.
I enjoyed the short Freddy sequences a lot -- the one in the clubhouse and the "got your nose" moments were great teasers.
Some of the deaths were better than others, of course. The off-screen death of the one kid's father was a bit lame -- sorry, but there should already have been at least some blood. But the opening death in the bed was priceless. As was the flaming machete used on the Jack Black wannabe.
Personally, the van trip bothered me -- you could never have convinced me to stay in a van with Jason. Ever.
Just when the movie was sagging, the two Freddy/Jason fights were both well worth watching. And the ending was solid, if not perfect. Frankly, we knew there couldn't be a decisive winner; aside from the fact that it would kill one franchise, it also would imply that one of the two evil men was "better" than the other. They both had to perish (or pseudo-perish, as it were).
Oh, and they gave out cool Jason masks at the preview. I can now kill people with impunity and blame it on the Crystal Lake killer.
Overall, quite enjoyable. Wonder what my dreams will be like tonight?
