Bear with me on this one:

So, this article talks about a man who is getting fined $10,000 for going to Iraq to peacefully protest the war last year. Leaving aside any thoughts on the penalty itself, there's this wonderful quote from the Treasure Department:

"However, in a society governed by the rule of law such as ours, choosing which laws to abide by and which to ignore is not a privilege that is granted to anyone."

Well now. Let's see. Bush is known to have lied to lied under oath to Congress (that pesky little State of the Union Address), committed major S&L fraud and insider trading, and is likely guilty of major influence peddling with Haliburton (although his Tricky Dick will likely take the fall for that one, and deservedly so). And that's not even mentioning Harken Energy.

And those are the established issues.

Seems to me that, if we're really not making exceptions, then a certain President should be facing some major charges right now (and really should have had his ass in jail when he was actually on the campaign trail). Which isn't to say that I relish the instability that would occur as the result of this, or even that I want it (honestly, does anyone really want to hear the words "President Cheney?"). Just that, well, it sounds like our government has just claimed that George should go on trial. That's all.

In other random news, I somehow missed the announcement that Dr. Laura is no longer a practicing Jew. I'm pretty sure that practicing Jews everywhere breathed a sigh of relief on hearing this. Now if she only denies being a woman and a human being, everyone else can relax, too.

And, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] softlywhispered, I've found the funniest parody morality site since LandoverBaptist: Americans for Purity: Winning the War on Masturbation.

That's my early morning web surfing.

Giving a state-of-the-union-address is not lying under oath. A lie, sure, but he was never sworn in, so he's safe on that.

S&L Fraud? Not sure of that one. Can you make sense of that for me?

As was stated a few times by a few people when Clinton was in office, he was sworn into the office the day of his inauguration. So technically he's always been "sworn in".

Not that it's ever stopped anyone before. ;)

What gave you that impression? The State of the Union address is just a speech. There's nothing about it in the Constitution; I can't imagine why you'd think it was given under oath.

That still bugs the crap outta me though - lying to some mutha fuhh who was hired by your opponents to find ANYTHING he could prosecute you for - bad, bad, very bad... lying to the entire American populace while standing in, well, one of our most hallowed halls of government - A-Okay! No problem!

He's gonna be like Reagan in that we'll never be able to pin anything on him and by the time we realize how badly we're frelled, it'll be far, far too late.

Yeah.... I have to say, lying to a court is always bad, but isn't lying bad, in general? We may not indict him for being a liar, but we can remember this for next election.

And, I dare say, many will...

I thought most of the S&L fraud was Neil's. I was living in Colorado then -- when Silverado Banking went bust, but Neil made lots of money. Luckily for him, Daddy had was vice-president and allowed the taxpayers to bail out his son. There were cheers when Neil moved back to Texas.

On the other hand, I think Blair testifies on Tuesday to the Hutton Inquiry about Dr. Kelly's death. That one will be interesting. It's already been made clear that Dr. Kelly indeed DID discuss the 45-minute bit and Alastair Campbell with the BBC reporters.

Possibly, but he's active military now (Commander in Chief), so all cases will have to wait until he's out of office.

What? It worked with Clinton. ;)

say that they are linked with LandoverBaptist. I thought that was by FAR the best thing I've seen written in a long time. Thank god we are not that fucking repressed.

Yeah, THAT's gonna happen. (sigh)

In other random news, I somehow missed the announcement that Dr. Laura is no longer a practicing Jew.

She converted to Judaism? Did the rabbi forget to tell her she's not technically supposed to proselytize Protestant Christian dogma anymore, like all that God Hates Fags crud she was spewing a few years ago?

She didn't convert, she's always been Jewish. Very, very conservative Jewish.

Well she did say she's gone through a de-evolution. So even if that was one step backwards that has to put her at amoeba level, eh?
