Went to Oxford comics, bought lots of gifts, as well as bags and boards.
Spent some serious time bagging, boarding, and boxing.
Saw
gwynraven, in town for a concert, who crashed at our place.
Played Backyard Baseball 2003 (a pretty nifty computer game, although our version is older than the one currently on the market, and doesn't come with actual MLB players) with Elayna.
Attempted to explain the infield fly rule to an eight-year-old. Thanked every nonexistent deity I could think of that the game doesn't include balks, too.
Met
asim, and hung out with him,
shadesong,
sibylla,
ryokan, and
elfboy999. Watched Josie and the Pussycats for the umpteenth time.

Date: 2003-09-15 01:43 am (UTC)I think balks are a non-rule, which serve the purpose of reminding players that the umpires are always in charge, and that they don't have to give a reason for their decisions. That's why you almost never see them called - they're there as an umpire security blanket.
If umpires called them all the time, players would want to know what the heck they did. But if a balk is called about once a season, the players will grumble and then go back to checking out hot chicks in the stands, and have it ingrained into them once again that the umpire is always right, and even when it seems like the umpire could be wrong, the umpire is still always right.
Balks are all about reminding the players that the umpire is GOD. Balks are so completely subjective that it seems to me that there is no other reason for them to exist.
Of course, as Dennis Miller says, that's just my opinion - I could be wrong.
