No more soccer. :-(

I never got around to posting this yesterday, but for those not aware, the WUSA, the women's professional soccer league, has folded. This sucks, as Elayna was just getting into Soccer, and I was looking forward to taking her to Atlanta Beat games.

When I think WUSA, I think of the mantra invoked in Bad Boys 2 while rubbing the trigger points on their ears.

*nods* It is a ridiculous continuation of the buddy cop film in the tradition of Lethal Weapon. I love it.

Then again, my enjoyment of slapstick and cheesiness is admittedly stupid sometimes. :) I like to think I make up for it by my enjoyment of other, more obscure films. Ooh! That reminds me! I saw Neverwhere onDVD and picked it up at Newbury Comics! No longer do I have to worry about my unshielded speakers eventually assaulting the VHS tapes I got at a comic convention years back.

I enjoy slapstick and mindless action flicks a lot. I just have never been able to enjoy Michael Bay's mindless action flicks. He just doesn't click with me.

Indeed. This history of not clicking would include The Rock, then?

'cause, hey... Connery. Not that this redeems the film *cough*Dragonheart*cough*, but he's pretty excellent.

Connery is a great actor, but Connery and wretched films go together like Sean and The Rock, Sean and Outland, Sean and The Avengers, Sean and Highlander 2, Sean and The Presidio, etc.

Basically, he'll take any part he's offered, script unread.

You know what he's like? He's like the indulgent grandfather that will totally play along with his grandkid who's pretending to be a bear. The kid looks ridiculous mauling Connery's leg, but Sean's just a loving granddaddy and goes along with it.

It does suck royally. I attended three Washington Freedom games this year and had attended most of their home games the previous years. It was an entertaining and relatively cost-effective way for a family to spend an afternoon/evening.

I have been talking with people who are somewhat in the know. I thought it odd that just before the sport would be the focus of worldwide attention with the Women's World Cup starting this weekend they made this announcement. Most people I've talked to who know this stuff say that it was done on purpose, hoping that the excitement of the WWC might get sponsors interested in the league again. IOW, this might not be a forever departure, just a temporary one. Not that I'd get my hopes up, but there is still hope there.

The only consolation I have in this is that the Freedom will be the defending WUSA champions in perpetuity if nothing is done to bring back the league. *wry g*

That's what I'm hoping as well (the use of the Cup for a new league, not the Freedom being perma-champs).

I'm not sure, but I suspect that Elayna will need at least a little spectacle and that's more likely at the pro level (let's face, real soccer matches have the occasional dull moment).

Absolutely.... If she is getting into it, perhaps there is a youth soccer league somewhere in the area. I was sort of fortunate, growing up in the city with the National Soccer Hall of Fame. We always had soccer. You couldn't go far without see someone playing it somwehere.

I spent many a cool fall saturday morning playing in a league. Some of my fondest memories were those mornings.
