Elayna is many things. But subtle has never been her strong suit. When she bought me a jellybean machine for my birthday a few years ago, she kept telling me that she couldn't tell me what it was (no, I wasn't asking!), but that she hoped I liked jellybeans. Yeah. That's her idea of subtle.

So I'm curious, because after reading a few more pages in her current book last night (The School Story by Andrew Clements), she told me that she had a great plan. But she couldn't tell me or Mommy, ever.

Well, the thing is, I know what the big secret in the book is (no spoilers, since it's on the cover), and it's that the main character writes a book and then gets it sold to her editor mother under a pen name. Since neither [livejournal.com profile] shadesong nor I are editors (we're just lowly writers), I'm not sure what she has in mind. I'm guessing it's to write a book and sell it, but I'm not sure why she feels she couldn't tell us. I suspect that when she finishes the book (and the mother finds out who wrote the book -- not a spoiler, since I'm just guessing here), she'll decide to tell us. :-)

My friend Rob would say of Elayna that she "puts the 'b' in 'subtle.'"

Isn't it magical? Knowing the thoughts go so quickly through their little heads. Even though most of the time they can't surprise us, they give it their best shots! When she does finally tell you, don't forget to act like it's the greatest gift you've ever been given! (although, after watching you with her, I don't think that's going to be a problem! Your daddy skills rock!)
