Baseball and football notes
Dec. 30th, 2003 09:09 amI love Jason Stark's annual Wild and Wacky column. It so nicely sums up the wonderful weirdness that is our national pastime. From the Twins scoring twice on a strikeout to the Giants having been no-hit by a guy named Kevin again (while no one named Kevin has ever no-hit any other team), I love this stuff. No other sport gets me this interested in the esoteric details.
Alas, the hot stove league news has died down, so there hasn't been much movement of interest lately. I still need my Mets to get a relief pitcher (looks like Braden Looper is the likely suspect), and to get rid of Cedeño (but I'm glad that a certain horrendous Mariners 3B turned down the trade, as the Mets don't need 3B help).
Not sure what I think about the A-Rod/Manny non-trade. I didn't find it half as exciting as everyone else, frankly, as egos that big just bore me, and their talents are pretty similar. I found the idea of the spin-off Garciaparra/Ordoñez deal more interesting, as Maglio is a very underrated player, even at this stage of his career.
The biggest news was the murder of Ivan Calderon, who had a couple of damned fine seasons. There's now some controversy, as there are suggestions that he was involved in some shady loan deals and also working as a bail bondsman (and might have loaned the money to someone who then murdered him). And I was a bit appalled at the defense of him by a friend: He dedicated himself to his family and cockfighting. It may be legal in the Caribbean, but that doesn't make it right. Being a bail bondsman is a hell of a lot more honorable than torturing animals.
On the football front, with my Jets having a wretched season, I'm not as excited about the playoffs as I normally am. I'm not sure if I should root against the Cowboys, because doing so is always morally right, or for them, because they have The Tuna. Not sure if I should root for the Pats, because I'd like to see something good come out of the AFC East, and they're a class group of players; or against them, because Belichick fucked over my Jets years ago. That said, I'm finding myself caring a lot more about the AFC teams this year than the NFC ones, who just strike me as mostly uninteresting (aside from the 'boys).
And yeah, I know that the Minor League Football Playoffs happen on New Year's Weekend, but I haven't cared about that league for years. Talk to me about them when they get payed over the table.

I'm a Boston boy, even if I don't have the accent to back it up. *grins*
