Random Saturday afternoon stuff
Jan. 17th, 2004 08:28 pmElayna and I watched Atlantis 2: Milo's Return, which was not my top choice, but after vetoing her other suggestions (trust me, you don't want to know), it was one I had a car-wreck interest in seeing.
Surprisingly, I enjoyed it.
Mind you, it was nowhere near as good as the first one (which is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies, and very under-appreciated). As far as I can tell, Mike Mignola had nothing to do with it, so the visuals are a notch down. Ditto the cast (what, you expected Michael J Fox to be back?). But they had a few returnees (Cree Summer, Don Novello), and everyone did a decent job.
The "movie" was actually the first few episodes of the never-released tv show, cobbled together into one larger plot. And based on that, I'd have loved to have seen the show continue. There's a surprisingly amount of dark stuff here (the bad guys in two of the three plotlines are permanently disposed of), and an interesting meta view of world religion, with all religions being sprung from the Atlantean one (and while the ones mentioned explicitly are Southwestern Native American and Norse, the implication that Judeo-Christian-Islam beliefs spring from there certainly hangs in the air). Not something I'd suggest anyone waste time buying, but worthwhile
As for the rest of the weekend without
shadesong (who's at Arisia and still having fun, last I heard), I've managed to keep Miss Kid entertained and mostly out of trouble. I've also been enjoying the chance to cook a bit. Made some brownies that are ugly but tasty last night, turkey hash and scrambled eggs this morning, and broiled catfish tonight. The last one set off the smoke alarm, but was tasty enough to be worth it. :-)
Since I managed to catch a decent nap this afternoon, I'm rested, and plan to stay up late to enjoy the movie I bought used and cheap at Blockbuster: Miner's Massacre. Yeah, I know. It sounds bad, even by horror movie standards. But the cast is practically a B-movie all-star roster: Jeff Conaway, Karen Black, Richard Lynch, John Phillip Law, etc. And it's directed by F/X guru, John Carl Buechler, who, aside from being a good F/X guy, also directed one of the better Friday the Thirteenth Movies (part 7). So yeah, it'll suck, but I expect to enjoy it.
Oh, and has anyone over at King of Chaos (join my army here, help my allies here) noticed that they've got a cute little applet to pass the time over here? Kinda nifty.
Off to shoo the kid into the bath.
Crap, just did some quick web-browsing before standing up, and discovered that Dave Cockrum (whose name you should know if you've ever read comics) is in the hospital with pneumonia. That sucks. :-(
No, really off to shoo the kid into the bath.
