I so wish I could use my sports icon for this one. But no. We got back from work yesterday to find the door sitting open for the second time in a bit over a year and a half. Some drug-addled punk broke in, stole our PS2, a handful of DVDs from our rack (still trying to figure out which ones), and [livejournal.com profile] shadesong's portable CD player (sitting on the table right by the door). Everything else, including the TV, the VCR, the DVD player, and even the PS2 games, was untouched.

But the scariest thing was that Max, our declawed (not by us!) Siamese, had gotten outside. Jack, the cat with claws and an attitude, stayed inside. But Max, who couldn't survive a fight with a pillow, was out there. And I saw him sitting on the back porch, but when I went out, he bolted. It took us forty minutes of searching to finally turn him up; I finally found him skulking in the bushes outside the front door, and he bolted to the house, only to smash into the glass outer door, then take off again. We repeated this a few times until [livejournal.com profile] shadesong opened the door just as he was running up. During the forty minutes that I was searching for him, I don't think I've ever had such violent thoughts. If I'd have found the asshole who let him out, I'd have done things to him that would make Hannibal Lecter look like a gentleman (minus the cannibalism, of course).

But our cat is safe, and our stuff will be covered by insurance. And we found out that the current handyman (who came out last night) is a hell of a lot better than the previous one (who let us go four days without a door). You can read more about what happened in [livejournal.com profile] shadesong's LJ. My reaction to this sort of stress is to stay away from the computer, so I couldn't bring myself to even vent about this until now.

Oh, I don't know... I think there would be fewer break-ins all around if punks knew they would be killed and eaten if they did it.

Still, I'm glad to know it was only replaceable things that were lost.

I'm sorry to hear about that... thank goodness no one was home/hurt. I understand how you feel about the cat... if my dog was let out, I'd be madder than a wet hen about it seeing as she can't keep warm because of her exposed skin and her bum leg makes me easy prey for any passing vehicle.

Glad to hear everything will put to rights. (well everything except retribution but ah well)

You know, if I were you I'd talk to your landlord about cutting some of those trees in your front yard. They are nice for privacy, but they also mean that someone can slip in and out unseen. That and being on a fairly busy road means easy getaway, which means high risk. They can't do much about the location, but they can do something about the trees, which means that the busyness turns into an advantage (someone can't get in and out without the risk of being seen by a passing car).

The same thing happened to me in 1999. Someone broke in through a window, stole my VCR and a power saw, then left the way he came...then Piper, my little calico, also left through that window, and I was hours finding her again.

It's a horrible feeling to think you may have lost a cat.

thank goodness you kitty did not get too far. that is a horrible feeling. i have had my purse stolen a couple of times in my 7 years in chicago, and it is not fun knowing that someone had both your keys and your address. :(

Getting robbed really sucks. I remember how pissed off I was when someone broke into my car. Glad no one was hurt. Since this is the second time, maybe y'all should consider moving.

Ouch!

I'm glad the cat is OK... and I thoroughly empathize with the murderous thoughts.
