Feh. Two days after Elayna had what we assumed was a brief tummy virus, she woke us today to tell us that she had a sore throat and a rash. One trip to the ER later, it turns out she has scarlet fever. Which is cool, in the sense that she has a disease that I thought didn't exist anymore, but sucky in the sense that she has to miss the Thrashers practice and autograph session today, and the Purim carnival tomorrow. Fortunately, she'll be able to go to school on Monday, since she'll have been taking her medicine for over 24 hours (scarlet fever, like strep (they come from the same infection), can lead to heart disease if not treated).

She's now resting on the couch with a glass of OJ, watching Kiki's Delivery Service.

On the plus side, since we had to go to CVS to get her prescription filled, I now have a Cadbury Cream Egg.

Erm, let me rephrase. I had a Cadbury Cream Egg.

I had scarlet fever! Of course that was like, 25 years ago. Luckily, you don't go blind or deaf from it anymore like Helen Keller. Go Penicillin!

I had scarlet fever as a child also...until now, I was the only person I'd ever heard of who'd had it.

They thought I had measles at first, and I remember patiently explaining that I **couldn't** have measles, because I'd been vaccinated for that....Silly grown-ups.

I knew what scarlet fever was, though, because I'd read "Little Women".

i am sorry to say but even if it is treated (they caught mine within 24 hours) it can still lead to some bad results for the rest of your life. :|

How bizarre, I would never have thought you could get scarlet fever anymore. Yay for antibiotics! Tell Miss Kid to feel good soon.

Gods. Yes, I certainly hope she gets better soon and stays that way. It's good you guys caught it soon... I had that when I was about four. It's theorized that it triggered my JRA. PLEASE make sure she takes all her meds, and rests, and everything.

Actually it's been shifted to more just coffee/tea... and we're either doing it at 11am or 2pm. Looking more like 2pm, as more folks can get together then.

Right now possible list is looking like Jasp, me, Dawn & Perry, my parents, maybe Ash, and maybe Vidicon & Beansidhe. Would inflicting that many people be alright? And is Elayna still contagious?

I had scarlet fever as a child. I almost died of it, since my parents assumed it was chicken pox and just - let me be. I now have heart problems, and a deteriorated valve in my heart that is assumed started with the fever, and later with Viral Menengitis.

Oh, sorry for going on about me. Im so sorry she is ill, and Im so HAPPY for her that she has parents like you, parents who care and take note of her illness, and who are aware of what can harm her.

I guess that was my whole point, really: that you are good parents, and that she is a lucky girl - even in her illness - to have you both.

It exists. I had it when I was 24 -- only about 19 years ago! I had a bad case of strep that turned into it.

I had it, too. I had pretty much every strep-related illness during fourth and fifth grade. I can't remember if it was that bout or another bout with strep where I hallucinated that Aslan's face appeared on my bedroom door and was talking to me... As far as anyone's been able to tell, I didn't suffer any lasting effects, though. And I haven't had strep since then!
