I should preface this by saying that I am not a football fan; however, my dad was watching the draft this morning, and I was intrigued by the Manning/Chargers deal. After seeing the deal they made with the Giants, and listening to the rep from the Chargers talk, it seems to me that choosing Manning as the 1st round pick served two purposes: 1. It got them who they wanted -- Rivers, as well as some prime draft slots. 2. It pissed Manning off royally. I was watching him, and while quite pleased that he could keep a smile on his face while being interviewed, I could tell he was not a happy boy. He looked much better when he was interviewed after the trade.
I think either one of two things will happen: he will learn from his time having to sweat the idea of being on a team he did not want to play for, or he'll turn into a prima donna. Either way, it was kind of interesting to watch this afternoon, to see all of the intrigue and plotting that went on for that trade.
Also, in a way, I agree that people like Eli Manning or even Elway should be able to get around where they are drafted. It seems to break down the rules and the merits behind the whole system, but then again, I'm not really a football fan, so I could be wrong, and it could always be like that, but it seemed this morning that those were the two names being tossed around to have been so very vocal about where they wanted to play. But, on the flip side, I can kind of see their point. However, I think Rivers had the best attitude. They called him after the Giants chose him, and he said he would be happy to be a Giant, but if he was traded, then he would be equally happy to play for that team. He just sounded like he would be happy to play.
