Warning sign #1, of course, is the three years on the shelf. But warning sign #2?

NEWSWEEK: So you’ve seen the movie?
Madeleine L’Engle: I’ve glimpsed it.

NW:And did it meet expectations?
ML: Oh, yes. I expected it to be bad, and it is.

EDIT: Oh, and read the rest of the article, as her comments on faith and religion are fascinating.

*grins* Yeah I'm fully expecting it to be bad, but I just have to see for myself.

I believe Disney is doing a Chronicles of Narnia film for 2005.
Perhaps this is a litmis test.

UGH. There was a Wonderworks one back in the 80s that's quite good. I hate to think of Aslan being Disney-fied. Just picture him looking like Simba.... *shudder*

I'm amazed they're even touching it, considering Disney usually like to leave religion alone.

I'll bet they just completely ignore all religious aspects of it. If you don't have a grounding in Christianity, it *can* just be read as a pretty fairy tale.

Yeah, that is a good article. I always enjoy finding interesting Christians like that.

I love Madeline L'Engle. It was Wrinkle that introduced me to SF/F along with Alexander's Chronicles of Prydian. Both sometime in first or second grade I think. Didn't really understand them at beyond the surface stories at that point, but loved the language and imagery.

It's a great article. I'm going to watch the movie anyway. I'll probably like it, because I'm just that way.

I wad planning on avoiding it, too, until I read the interview. Now that it's been ferivied [typo preserved] as a travesty by the creator, I can watch it without feeling the need to condemn it. I can freely laugh at it and make jokes about it.

Pity it's bad, according to L'Engle. It has such gorgeous visuals, word-wise.

Her writings on faith and religion were extremely important to my figuring out a functional spiritual path for me in the eighties, and moving through it and changing it since then.

Thanks
