On more than one occasion, I've mentioned how much I love Austin-based Trish Murphy. She never tours outside of Texas (other than one trip to DC, according to her web page), but you can download a few of her songs from her site. My favorites of the freebies are "The Grinch" and "Scorpio Tequila" (the latter is one of my favorite songs of hers, period).

[livejournal.com profile] losgunna drew my attention to The Clumsy Lovers, an alt-bluegrass band. They've got a number of good songs on their site, and you can also hear their latest album in its entirety via streaming. My favorite of their songs is "Mercy."

Bad Religion also has a bunch of MP3s on their site. But really, why don't you own all these, already?

Don't bother going to MP3.com for free music anymore, as they now serve as a link/clearinghouse for the pay MP3 sites. C/Net has moved the free (and hella obscure) stuff to http://music.download.com (although since the old catalog was lost, don't count on finding much there right now).

So, what are your favorite legal sites for free MP3s?

Everyone needs to get some Freezepop (http://www.freezepop.net) (stamped with the Schnecken Fussy Two Year Old Seal of Approval), some Fountains of Wayne (http://www.fountainsofwayne.com) and some Vienna Teng (http://www.viennateng.com) in their lives.

Freezepop did Achewood-inspired "Here Comes a Special Boy". Yendi, If you haven't seen Achewood (http://www.achewood.com) yet, you should.

Vienna Teng doesn't have downloadable MP3s? She used to. *checks site* She does, but you may have to uncompress them. They seem to be .mp3.zip files.
Although she's one I'd recommend buying the album for. At least the first one.

*nods* Definitely download 'Gravity' and 'Lullabye for a Stormy Night'. Those are my favorites. All of them are good though.

I've got a new find for you. I know you like alt-country and I honestly don't know how to describe TV On The Radio (that's the band name) in terms of alt-country but I will say this. If you can imagine a swamp-rock pentecostal gathering with Morphine-type skronk and beautiful male vocal harmonies fronted by Peter Gabriel, and you think you might like it, this is the band for you. I recommend "Ambulance" or "Staring at The Sun" if you're using i-tunes but who am I kidding- buy the album. It kicks ass. The album is called Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes.

Yay! I bought the album blindly when I was in the Lower East Side. [livejournal.com profile] minniethemoocha recommended them and it was instant love. I love bringing music to others. [livejournal.com profile] minniethemoocha calls me Indie Evangelista for good reason.

Hmm, thanks, I'll have to check her out while I'm in Austin.

What's sad about the demise of mp3.com is that was were I located all the obsure artists of odd genres I can't get information on otherwise. Where else online could I have done a search for 'pagan' and be given results for artists that self-promote and therefore not listed anywhere I can find. I've bought a good 50 cds or so of small artists when mp3.com was in it's glory.
