I met Paula Danziger once. Actually, I wrote to her a long time ago and got a huge long letter back written on orange paper with purple ink.
Then about five years ago, I won a scholarship to go to the ALA conference for the first time, sponsored by Putnam (now part of the Penguin etc. house). Part of the award meant that the other recipients and I got to go to the Caldecott dinner with reps from the publisher and some of the authors. I sat next to Paula Danziger who swept in wearing a black chiffon and beaded flapper like dress complete with the beaded band with a feather. She was charming and funny, although I also knew she had a very complicated life.
Sorry to interject here, but the "How Fletcher was Hatched" icon is just too cool to let pass. I loved that book as a child, and still own my copy to this day =)

This is so sad.

Wow, given her age at death, she was pretty young when she wrote that, relatively.
