Poker Shows, good and bad
Jul. 11th, 2004 12:11 amIt's been a while since I've watched an episode of World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel, as it always seems to be up against stuff on other channels. But I caught tonight's rerun of the Wednesday show (the Paris Grand Prix), and I once again remembered why I love it. It's just a damned well produced show, and does a nice job profiling the locations as well (something that ESPN can't really do -- "Banyon's was founded by a murderer on the lam from the Texas law" is interesting only once, not twenty times).
I also made the mistake of Tivoing Late Night Poker, on Fox Sports. What an utter piece of shit. You know those late-night wresting shows that are from the twelfth biggest organization or so, the ones too minor to even attract the washed-up stars like Tito Santana? The ones with twelve people in the audience, all sitting in that one row that the stationary camera has in sight? Late Night Poker is the poker equivalent of that.
It's a British import, but the American doing commentary may well be dubbed in after it get shipped. Aside from the fact that half an hour simply isn't enough time to run a match, even with editing, the camera angles are awful, commentary is horrendous, and it's all but impossible to actually follow the action. Just a muddled mess.
