Finished on my trip to DC:

The Long Hot Summoning, Tanya Huff: Like the first two, this one is just a lot of fun. Diana finally supplants her sister as a lead character, the cats are a blast, and we get an anime style King Arthur. In a haunted shopping mall. What else could one want?

A Hat Full of Sky, Terry Pratchett. It's another Tiffany Achining/Wee Free Men book, and it's better than the first. Which says a lot, if you remember how much I liked it. Much more integrated into the Discworld than the first one was, too.

I'm still processing this a bit -- it's metafiction, cut from the same bizarre cloth that gives us <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005JLRE/yendisjournal-20">Adaptation</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1841951838/yendisjournal-20">Lanark</a>, although it's lighter than either. A bit of a let down at the end, but a fun ride.

I also hit a few stores and bought stuff while in DC.

The Borders across the street from the training center had a nice selection of British imports, so I browsed it. A lot. Thanks to discussion on one of my horror lists, I'd been hearing all sorts of nice stuff about Phil Rickman, so I bought the first Merrily Watkins novel, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1568583222/yendisjournal-20">The Wine of Angels</a> (which has an American edition that I've never actually seen). So far, I'm enjoying it -- a nice mix of horror and mystery, with a nice balance of Pagan and Christian themes.

I also picked up the TPB of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0312878125/yendisjournal-20">Dreaming Down Under</a> off the Booksamillion close-out rack. At a price of $2.50, that amounts to $1.25 for the Paul Brandon story, $1.25 for the Stephen Dedman story, and everything else is a bonus.

I can't remember the other books I bought, but I know my bag was a lot heavier coming back than heading over there. :-)

I've liked the Phil Rickman that I've read. I was excited to see that a lot more of his stuff is now available over here! I've got the one you're reading, and will probably start it soonish. I'm hoping to like the series.

I'm a bit surprised that you thought a Hat Full of Sky is better than Wee Free Men. I think that the characters are more developed, but that's to be expected for a second novel on the same people done by a proper writer, but the plot of the first one was better, I thought.

Now you've made me think twice about my opinion. Gotta ruminate some more.
