Episode Three

Yeah, I know, it's Revenge of the Sith, supposedly a nice balance to Episode three of that good trilogy with Lucas's name attached to it.

All I know is, you don't have to be the world's greatest expert at anagrams to know what's really getting revenge on the fans here.

(come to think of it, The Golgothian was a better character than almost everyone in Episode One)

Hmm. I saw Episode One twice (not counting my viewings of the Phantom Edit, of course) and Episode Two once. I have the oddest feeling that I'll continue the downward trend...

I remember rumours that the 2nd and 3rd films were going to be called "Rise of the Empire" and "Fall of the Jedi" (which I thought had a nice symmetry to the first trilogy)... but of course this was before the release of "The Phantom Menace" and the even-worse-named "Attack of the Clones" (blecchh!)

I don't expect much from the Episode Three, given how awful the episodes One and Two were. Lucas is such a lousy director.
The plot was somewhat interesting in Episode Two but of course it was ruined by awful acting and video-game like special FX (during some scenes I thought I was watching "Final Fantasy : the spirits within"). >_<

Anyway I'm bracing myself for a huge disappointment.

I know that to most Star Wars fans, what I'm about to say is considered complete blasphemy, but it's really how I feel.

I think the majority of the Original Star Wars Trilogy was complete crap. With the notable exception of a few actors' performances, the acting was all horrendous. James Earl Jones did a great job voicing Darth Vader and the guy in the Vader suit (can't remember his name) was a rather good physical actor. The guy playing Emperor Palpatine was great. C3PO was great. Obi-Wan was great. Harrison Ford was... well... he was Harrison Ford. Harrison Ford is pretty much a one note actor. Frank Oz was awesome as the voice and puppetteer for Yoda, of course. Other than that, watching dialogue in the original trilogy makes me want to break things.

The special effects in the originals were spectacular for their time but with only a few exceptions they look pretty damn crappy now. I like the effects in the new trilogy much better.

Everyone talks about how the originals had so much more of a deeper story. I have never seen any deep story in the original trilogy but maybe that's my own fault. Both trilogies seem to have been made for a mostly child audience. The fans' dedication to the original trilogy seems, to me, a product of nostalgia for something they loved as kids or teenagers. A new extension to a childhood obsession can never live up to the original no matter how much better the new thing is actually made. Fans have had twenty-something years to romantacize and mentally perfect the originals into something they never were.

It's all fairly mindless action and adventure with a basic plot tacked on to give characters something to fight about. It's the cinematic equivalent of pulp novels. With better acting, better effects, and actors I'm more familiar with, I enjoy the new ones much more. I just don't really attach any meaning to any of them. I do hate Jar-Jar Binks, though.
