So, as we're taking Miss Kid to school, she asks if we've seen The Haunted Mansion.

"No, and if there's anything resembling a merciful God, I never will," I don't quite say. Actually, I think that I only got the first word of that sentence out, but I was thinking the rest.

"Well, it's a great movie." Our daughter is a little less picky than I am. "But there's one curse word in it."

[livejournal.com profile] shadesong and I pause, unsure if we should ask, since telling one's daughter to repeat a swear isn't something one does, in general.

Reading our thoughts, she says, "beaver."

We pause, again. Beaver? Now, she's gotten exposed to a swear word or five before. Seen movies where the word "shit" might get uttered once or twice, and certainly heard her share of lesser words. But beaver only becomes a bad word when it's used in a pretty damned sexual context, and nothing she sees should use it that way.

We pause again. Elayna fills in the blank. "He says beaver you over and over."

We're really kind of confused, but Elayna catches us up.

"You know, damn. Because beavers make dams, so I say beaver instead."

[livejournal.com profile] shadesong and I both breathe a sigh of relief.

Although I'm now worried about what will happen the next time this comes up, say, in school.
