Gak, part 2
Aug. 20th, 2004 10:42 amOur phone (and, of course, DSL) went out Wednesday night.
Add to that, Elayna was still sick yesterday, and
shadesong had her biopsy yesterday, so I ended up taking a sick day on a day when more work piles up than almost any other day. And, of course, the boss called (on my home number, so I only found out when I checked voice mail from my cell), wanting to know if I could possibly find a way to come in. Sigh.
DSL and phone were finally restored at a bit after three yesterday.
So, today, Elayna is still sick,
shadesong is on home duty, and I'll be here until who knows when. My inbox has exploded, and it turns out that not everything in it is spam. Although I'd love to treat it that way.
So, no reading LJ for me until at least tomorrow, sorry. No links, either, other than, to celebrate Back-to-School (starting tomorrow, oh joy!), Emory has once again placed 20th in the US News Random University Ranking Generator. Making us, once again, the second-least famous top 25 school in the country (because all too few folks have heard of Washington University, either).
I don't have time to post my rant about how Gary Hall is spoiled, whiny wanker who has joined the US Men's Basketball Team as the only Americans I'm actively rooting to not medal. I don't have time to rant about how Svetlana Khorkina got a score at least two tenths of a point too high on the uneven bars, not only unfairly eclipsing Emilie Lepennec's much, much better performance, but also cheating her fellow Russian out of a medal. I can only assume that a judge got one hell of a good blowjob out of her, because the score sure wasn't based on anything she did on the apparatus. Nor do I have time to rave about the Olympic swimming events, or rant about the announcing.
And don't get me started on the first two World Series of Poker shows, where almost everyone I was rooting for was knocked out.
I don't have time to vent about the Mets (or take pride in the occasional good note, like yesterday's sweep). No comics news or venting, not even about Bendis's comment about Paul W.S. Anderson in the latest Powers, or about either of the Identity books (Disc and Crisis), both of which rock my world.
Nor do I have time to vent about the stuff I'm writing for Bookslut, or work, or anything else that deserves four or five good paragraphs.
But consider this a bookmark post, for things I might rant about next week. Or not.

Date: 2004-08-20 11:35 am (UTC)I've inconsistantly looked at it over the years. To be honest, the general list doesn't mean as much as the specialized lists anyway.
It's like getting a Comp-Sci degree from Duke. Yeah, the name recognition will give you a little pull, but that's not the school's forte.
Duke actually hit #1 once.
Where it really matters to me, they've done it year after year after year. Of course, so have those bastards in light blue from down the road.
whew!
Date: 2004-08-20 08:24 am (UTC)for real, tho, i'm sorry the world seems to be shitting on you this week.

Date: 2004-08-20 11:24 am (UTC)US News plays with the formula constantly, as do most of the schools that report data. All this ranking shift indicates is that the numbers (fudged and real) that we fed them didn't compare favorably to the numbers that others fed them. And don't doubt for a second that every school on the list fed them fudged numbers.
