WIth the house to myself this weekend, I got lots of reading and DVD watching done.

I finally watched Terminator 3, which I'd picked up during one of Blockbuster's many super-sales on pre-viewed DVDs. It was a surprisingly enjoyable film. The entire first half of the movie struck me as a response to The Matrix: Reloaded. Basically, it was director Jonathan Mostow saying, "Look, if you're going to have an extensive car chase/fight scene involving meta-humans or otherwise strong people, this is how you do it."

The rest of the movie was just as much fun, even ignoring two major plot holes:

FIrst, why did the TX look for Kate at 5:30 in the morning at the clinic? Shouldn't she have tried her home first?

And second, with at least three of John's lieutenants dead, how will that affect the future? That's not a hole, admittedly, but it's still a question.

Oh, and watching Claire Danes is always fun.

I also watched Destroy All Monsters, which I hadn't seen since I was a kid. I'm a sucker for Toho movies, and this was the ultimate one, featuring Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra (the Big Three of Toho), as well as minor leaguers Anguilas, Manda, Barugon, Speiga, Varan, and Minya (aka Godzilla's really annoying son) as the Good Guys, although they're mind-controlled by evil Moon Maidens and destroy most of the world. After breaking free of the mind control (thanks to the heroic soldiers), they have to fight King Ghidorah in the climactic battle.

This is a movie that everyone needs to see. Fuck Huckabees. I Heart Toho.

I also finished the latest James Alan Gardner book, Radiant, which I posted about this weekend (for those who missed it).

Yesterday, I found a review copy of Mighty Love at Book Nook for $5. As a huge Chaykin fan, I'd been looking forward to this one. The concept is fun -- a wealthy defense attorney and a police detective, at odds during their "day" jobs, are also the only two masked avengers in their city, and eventually meet each other while masked, finding more sparks as vigilantes than as civilians. It's got the usual amount of Chaykin plot-twists, some nice unresolved stuff, and is a blast to read (even with one major artistic goof implying that Skylark can eat through her mask). Of course, it's impossible to see a gorgeous Chaykin redhead and not read her like Mandy Krieger, but once you get past that, it's a fun crime/romantic comedy graphic novel.

I also watched the Jets game. There's a reason I don't tend to watch sports when the child is in the house. I shouted "fuck" at the TV at least 78 times during that broadcast. I also suggested multiple physically impossible acts that the replay ref who overturned that first Dolphins fumble should perform. And I'm not sure I could ever reconstruct the series of curses I uttered when the defense broke down and allowed a 50-yard rush after we buried the 'fins behind their five on a kickoff.

And that's on a game we won.

In other news:

Interesting LJ of the day: [livejournal.com profile] 1st_and_2nd (discovered thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mtl). It's a New York photoblog of the same corner of the City everyday. It's an interesting experiement in people-watching (although it's not the first NYC street-corner I would have thought of). It complements [livejournal.com profile] ny_unfocused on my FL as a way to catch random NYC pics.

Oh, and guess what? The Cheney Administration *gasp* lied! I'm shocked! Shocked and appalled! It's like being told that the sky is *gasp* blue!

But to counterbalance that suckiness, we're getting a Bloom County Movie!! Woohoo!
