I was nattering around, fiddling with my Amazon wishlist, and Elayna came in and sat on my lap. After a second of looking at the screen, she asked me one of those questions that just horrifies parents of my generation:

"What's The Compelte Calvin and Hobbes?"

Shit. We've let our child get by for nearly ten years without her seeing Calvin and Hobbes?

That borders on intellectual cruelty. I guess I just assumed she's been exposed to it, but Watterson retired when Elayna was less than a year old.

I grabbed Yukon Ho! off the shelf, and am currently rectifying that mistake.

But I still feel guilty for depriving her for this long.

Agreed. How can anyone go without that? Hell, strips even show up in my Educational Psych. textbook.

eep! I'm not even a parent and that horrifies me! How could you have let this poor child grow up without the joys of warm tiger tummies?

This brought to my attention the fact that *I* have never introduced my own offspring to Calvin and Hobbes.

I shall rectify this as soon as possible.

I WAS gonna CPS, but since you quickly fixed it, don't let that happen again. ;) (No, I don't the preceding joke was the least bit funny... I'm not always that good at the dark humor thing.)

From everything I know about Elayna, it's right up her alley...and she's at just the right age to really appreciate it, too, I think.

But wow, this makes me feel old the same way looking at my list of Sunday School kids and realizing they were all born when I was in high school makes me feel old.

Josh (who will be 11 in two days) is a major C&H freak..he's read everyone one of hte books we have about a million times, and remembers almost every strip just by saying the first line. Its scary.

Now, now.

You can never make up for wasted time, it's true. But you're on the ball now and you can't waste the Calvin and Hobbes time you do have with your daughter fretting over the time you've lost. You're a good man. And she's going to be a very creative and warped little person when she's full grown, which is a super-good thing.

My family never got newspapers at home, so I was not exposed until I started dating my husband, who owns all or most of the collections. There were a couple of weeks there where I didn't do anything between coming home from work and going to sleep but read Calvin and Hobbes.
