I survived the sale!
Mar. 4th, 2005 08:33 amSo, last night, I went to the preview sale at the Glenn School Clothing sale. The preview sale is only for folks who bring in at least $50 worth of stuff to sell, and it's a madhouse. You know those clips you see of the women clamoring for cheap wedding dresses at Filene's Basement? That's what this is like, but with children's clothing.
I got there at 4:15, and was about 75th in line. By the time 6:00 rolled around, there were about 300 people there. There'll be the same line this morning when it opens to the general public.
Fortunately, we had a game plan. Elayna only needed dresses. No shirts, pants, etc. So I went to one area, and managed to find about eight damned nice dresses for Elayna. With one exception -- a gorgeous reversible purple flower dress that I paid $8 for -- nothing cost more than $5. And every bloody one of them was as good as new -- they reject anything that has rips, stains, or missing buttons.
Then I went down to the toy room, and I really scored: I found Scene It, in perfect shape, for $4.50! Yeah, I'm not above shopping for the adults in the household at the sale. :-) I also scored a cheesy looking X-Men multitap and DVD remote for the PS2 for $2, still brand new in package, a star/space projector toy for Miss Kid, and a magnetic toy kit that included British pennies (two for one -- science and numismatics).
I resisted looking at non-dresses for Elayna (because I'm always tempted by shirts, etc). I also resisted buying things like the N-64s and other old gaming systems. Truly a minor miracle.
And more importantly, I survived the maddening crowds.
Now the fun part begins -- waiting until next week, when we can see how much money we made selling our stuff.
