The commencement speaker when my mom got her Ph.D. was Mikhail Gorbachev. The last one I remember from when I worked there was The Dalai Lama. For me, I just don't think Brokaw stands up to that kind of celebrity...
Gorby's speech (which was also in my graduation year) was, well, dreadfully dull. At best.
The Dali Lama was wonderful, but Brokaw's up there with most everyone else from recent years. And snagging him in his retirement year makes it a little more special.
