They've finally announced a release date for the best movie of 2004, Sideways!

And it's three days before my birthday!

Yes, that is a hint, dammit. :-)

(Although in all honesty, if no one else has bought it, I'd be shocked if my Mom doesn't buy it for me, so you're free to stick with your original plan to buy me The Criterion Collection Gift Set if you really insist.)

Oh good grief. I liked Sideways just fine, but calling it the "best movie of 2004" is an early contender for "biggest overstatement of 2005."

It's a fine movie, just not anywhere near Oscar-quality. Looking over my list from 2004, I see the following movies that were easily as good as or much better than Sideways:

The Dreamers
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Kill Bill Volume 2
Baadassss!
Super Size Me
Fahrenheit 9/11
Spider-Man 2
Garden State
Donnie Darko (director’s cut)
Maria, Full of Grace
Shaun of the Dead
The Incredibles
Vera Drake
The Aviator
Goodbye, Lenin
Finding Neverland

And I know you've seen at least one of those.

I use "Oscar-quality" to describe work that is worthy of an Oscar, in the ideal Platonic sense of the Oscar.

Looks like somebody's pining for 2005's Most Condescending Reply award.

I hated Sideways with the red-hot passion of a thousand suns. (Or maybe not... I fell asleep right around when the guy was throwing a hissy fit in the country and running off into the vineyard, and woke up right before the Armenian wedding ceremony, which, I have to note, was not very accurate, seeing as a good chunk of the language was wonky. This is according to our resident armenian citizen.)

The Criterion Collection Gift Set is just so absird that it's going on my wishlist right now. Because, absurdity being what it is, someone with an extra five grand will stumble across it and buy it for me...

And one day after mine! See, April babies are the best babies in all of babydom.

And the idea of random billionaires buying that whole wodge of DVDs and sending them off to anyone handy enough to have them on their wishlist is the dream that keeps me dreaming. (Though I've got like, 80 of those discs already, cause I'm a gimp.)

(Pointed your way by Shadesong. Will be for the adding to the friendslist, if I might.)
