Tomorrow is Elayna's birthday party! Hooray!

Yes, I know that Andre Norton died. I tried some of her books years ago, but they just never clicked with me. But if nothing else, her influence on and importance to any number of writers I admire speaks volumes about what she accomplished. And the story of Tor rush-printing one copy of her latest book so she could see it before she died was touching.

While going to Patrick Nielsen Hayden's blog to see if he corroborated that tale (no mention yet), I saw the announcement of The Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy for Teens : First Annual Collection, edited by Hayden and Jane Yolen. Very nifty idea and companion to the main Year's Best (although I do think that there may be a wee bit of awkwardness created by Yolen including an Adam Stemple short story, even if I've heard nothing but praise for said story).

As I mentioned last night (for those who, like me, often fall behind on off-hours LJ reading), Mythbusters is undergoing some casting changes.

What's life with [livejournal.com profile] yendi and [livejournal.com profile] shadesong like? It involves my wife getting to hear (or, as she puts it, putting up with) Zelazny puns.

Best article (so far) on the steroid hearings, rightly nailing Congress for holding them, McGwire for his testimony, and Selig for just being a prick, has been Jason Stark's.

Finally, why didn't anyone tell me that the remake of The Toolbox Murders was out this week? c'mon -- how can you say no to a movie with a poster like this (gotta love that tagline, in particular):

Honestly, rushing a printing because someone is dying or has died is part of the publishing biz. When a noted author dies, suddenly his/her books start selling like crazy so there are rush printings of every book the author's written. It was nuts here when Carol Shields died. Likewise Arthur Miller. It's not just about money, it's about what the readers buy as well.

Andre Norton was the biggest influence imagineable not only on how I write, but also on what I read.

I picked the Adam Stemple story, not Jane, as is noted in the book.
