For the record, if I'm ever in a persistent vegetative state, I want you all to randomly split up and make a huge fucking fuss over me, file tons of lawsuits, and make the government pay more attention to me than to things like the House leader's list of ethical violations, the ongoing clusterfuck in Iraq, the upcoming clusterfucks in China/Taiwan, Korea, Syria/Lebanon, and Iran, the continued failure of the "No Child Left Behind" act, the economy that penalizes personal debt but rewards a growing national one, and the continued attempts to rape what's left of our wilderness. Because, shit, if I go, why not take the rest of the world with me?

Sure hope Terri Schiavo was/is a nihilist.

I read on another LJ today that she was a bulimic--in fact, the heart attack that caused her current state was due to the bulimia. Does that count?

AMEN AMEN AND AMEN.

So, where is the bankrupcy law that forces big businesses to pay all THEIR people when THEY go bankrupt, ala Enron?

More and more reasons to have an ironclad living will, advance medical directive, and power of attorney set up.

... and a clause in your living will stating that if a hospital ignores your written no-code directive, your family should not be held liable for subsequent medical bills.

Someone I know had her grandfather resuscitated in spite of the no-code directive on his chart. He lived on in a terrible state for another week, and after the family got over the horror and trauma of seeing what had been done to him against his explicit wishes, they got enormous bills for his "care".

Some people reading this might not know about [livejournal.com profile] scottbateman's LJ, which contains his syndicated political cartoons, stuff from his sketchbook, his music tastes, and occasional other stuff.

Just don't even get me started on what's about to happen with the disabled... won't all those conservative fuckwads be surprised to find their streets and alleyways being cluttered up with the mentally challenged? Not to mention all the disabled people who will soon be left out on the streets when their bankrupt (but not legally!) families can no longer care for them. Huzzah for the Social Security reform!!

No, they won't be surprised. That's the problem. They don't seem to care. Good example is the VA benefits that keep getting cut - a lot of Vietnam era vets have been finding their VA benefits cut to next to nothing. (My Uncle is one of them)
Funding for mental health care is severely lacking in this country.

Otherwise, you're right. I did note the sarcasm... *sigh*

One other thing about the bankruptcy issue - since it's very easy to file lawsuits in this country, the new bankruptcy laws might really screw over some small businesses (sole proprieterships, anyway) - I'm a good example. Creditor decided that my payment arrangement wasn't adequate, so they pushed a lawsuit on me knowing that I couldn't afford to defend myself. With tighter bankruptcy laws, people are now going to find themselves becoming nearly indentured servants, with ruined credit *and* court-ordered payment plans. Blah.
