Marc Cohn got shot in the head. According to the reports, he was released from the hospital and is doing fine.

Which means I don't have to feel too guilty when I say that:

A) Man, "Walking in Memphis" didn't suck that much.

and

B) He's co-headling with Suzanne Vega? He's a fucking one-hit wonder, she's one of the best artists of the last 25 fucking years. What the fuck?

b) ....who is also a one-hit wonder.

The difference is whether you like what they've produced outside their hits.

See [livejournal.com profile] redfisher's comment. As a casual person, all I know is Luka. I'm sure she had some other minor hits, but as "Dude who doesn't pay attention" I have no idea what they are.

Hits have nothing to do with popularity.

Exhibit A: James William Buffett.

C) He's married to Elizabeth Vargas??? That's the weirdest TV journalist marriage since Maria Shriver.

Well, "Silver Thunderbird," which was at least as much of a hit as "99.9°F". It's interesting, though, reading the other comments here, and realizing that as a fan (of Vega, not Cohn, really), my view of her career is horribly skewed in terms of visibility: "Whaddya mean, she's a one-hit wonder? What about 'Blood Makes Noise', or 'Marlene on the Wall', or...or...oh, wait, you probably haven't heard those...."

Personally, I like how this article was in CNN's Entertainment section.

Over on TFL we were remarking that some criminals in Denver must have gotten their hands on some stolen .22 Shorts... this is the third Denver "head shot" in as many days that's been survived with little injury other than some stitches and a bad headache...

Actually, I rather like both Cohn and Vega. I don't know about top 40 material, but then I don't tend to listen to that sort of music anyhow. :) I last saw Vega live in June; alas, the last time I saw Cohn live was, ironically, perhaps, in Denver. He was performing in a large synagogue that was also used as a music venue; I recall him looking around and saying how he'd never thought he'd be performing a rock show in shul...

More soul or blues than anything else. I'd rank it in the same categpry with Billy Joel's piano works.

It was the blues references that I liked about it. I didn't think of it as a true country song at all -- except that it was about Tennesee.

Man.........now you're making me want to hear it again. I'll have to look it up online.

If you haven't got a prayer...

Walking in Memphis is a fine song unless you actually live in Memphis. Then you can't go to any sort of official function that involves a P.A. system without hearing it. In fact, the president of the University of Memphis has it played at every eveny she appears for. Every. Single. One. It is even on the wallpaper in the sky boxes at the FedEx Forum (where the Memphis Grizzlies play).

Still not enough to shoot poor Mr. Cohn over though.

Thankfully he wasnt shot here in Memphis, or there would really be a field day...we'd then have "Carjacked in Memphis"...

Loved his first and second albums, the third a bit less so. But the song "Olana" made me do some research on Frederic Church, so that was a good thing.

"The Rainy Season" and "Paper Walls" remain two of my favorites. Glad to know he escaped serious injury.

"one Hit Wonder" on commercial radio. He has worked with a ton of really incredible musicians on their records, and had them guest on his.

I've thought of about a dozen funny responses, mostly centering around the idea of anyone "needing" "a lot of" Zen. But if what you're saying is that you'd like to talk about Zen, and you're sincere, then it would be a disservice to blow it off.

If you really want to discuss Zen and how it relates to Witchcraft, just drop me a line at dragontdc@hotmail.com

Actually, he's not a one hit wonder. True Companion gets every bit as much airplay, plus he did Walk Through The World and Almost Home which got a bit of airplay in their day.

I love his stuff. :)
