1. Razor Magazine is dead. Damn. There goes one of the magazines I snagged a free subscription to.

2. In the movie meme from yesterday, I omitted a film(well, I probably omitted plenty, especially in the "underlooked" category). A truly despised film that I love is the 1996 version of The Island of Dr. Moreau. It starred Brando and Kilmer, possibly the two least fun people in Hollywood to work with at the time, and was slammed by everyone. But I adored it. Saw it in the theatre twice, even. Assholes or not, the leads did a great job, and Brando's late-career mumbling and overacting was actually put to good use. The cast included Ron Perlman and Fairuza Balk, and it was directed by John Frankenheimer (who gave us the good version of The Manchurian Candidate*). A film that's a lot more fun than most people remember it being.

3. First class of the year is in an hour. Ick. My voice is still a wee bit raspy from last week's cold. Maybe I can convince them I'm Tara Reid. Only sober, and with better (man) boobs.

4. Awesome Slings and Arrows news, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] muse0fire: Season 2 will debut on Sundance in February! Woohoo! Not that I want to wait that long, but at least we now have a specific date!

5. I meant to mention this a while ago, but over in Kingdom of Loathing, I gave up on being Hardcore. I'm still Oxygenarian, but I don't have the patience for hardcore. Currently, my Turtle Tamer is at level 9, and has completed all the available quests (including the Felonia-related ones).

6. Finally, for anyone else doing the clues over at The Nameless Novel for the next Lemony Snicket Book (and I love the current Amazon cover art for it!), they've now revealed both a page of text (with some omissions) and three illustrations, and are currently working towards the cover art itself. Quite fun. Especially since both the text and the images hint at the return of some old characters and settings. :-)

*He also gave us Dead-Bang. But we can assume he was on crack when he made that one.

1. I've never heard of it.
2. I bet Ron Perlman played a character that required extensive latex appliances and makeup. Have you read the book?
3. Tara Reid? You won't even convince them you're Reed Richards!
4. I've never heard of it.
5. Never heard of this either.
6. I haven't read the Lemony Snicket books, but keep meaning to.

6. There's a movie tie-in puzzle book?

2. I enjoy Island of Dr. Mephesto also. 'And here, of course, is my four-assed ostrich.'

2a. I also enjoy the Manchurian remake. In no way a replacement of the original classic, but I felt it succeeded in being its own thing.

3. Ph34r [livejournal.com profile] yendi's man-boobs. They dispense good recommendations.

Well, it depends. When Tara gets really drunk, there's no telling what can come out of her boobs. Ice skates, Ernest Borgnine — the sky's the limit.

Dude, do you really wanna go there? I mean, if we collaborated on an extended riff on Tara Reid's boobs, the result would be legendary, but then on our deathbeds we'd look back and say 'Damn. I spent a whole evening riffing on Tara Reid's funbags. I suck.'

Ah, but the the 1977 Island of Dr. Moreau (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0076210/) was the very first film I ever wanted my money back for, despite what I remember as some pretty good makeup on the creatures.

Burt Lancaster, man. Burt Lancaster is reason enough to see, hear, smell, or blow anything.

I like The Island of Dr. Moreau, in one of those cheesy guilty-pleasure type of ways. I was reading the book when it was announced they were releasing the film, which made me all the more excited.

Best thing about the Moreau remake? When Kilmer goes into his extended riff on a Brando impression, complete with wardrobe. Totally unexpected, and hilarious. I also remember that film for being the first and last time anybody tried to turn David Thewlis into the Next Great Thing. Unappreciated? Yeah, but it is still crap for the most part.

And I'll defend the Manchurian remake like this: the first one was Cold War era, so much of the politics surrounding it is from another time, and another place. The remake updated it to a more modern setting with the details, but what's funny about all that is how little updating is needed on the core plot points - the principles of power in a jaded society are basically the same today as they were fifty years ago. Now, nobody's gonna top Angela Lansbury, I'll give you that...

In no way am I saying it's superior to the original, but it's pretty darn good, as remakes go. Cable is a good way to check it out - no cost but your time.
