I think Bengie Molina called it right -- if there's even the slightest bit of doubt, every catcher in the majors instictively tags the runner. Which means that Paul either clearly knew he caught it, or that he bollixed things up so badly, he could be the goat of the series.
Tag the runner. I've seen catchers do it even when it was clearly caught. Just to make sure. Baseball is a game of making sure. How many times do you see the shortstop or 2nd baseman tag a runner on second multiple times before throwing the ball back to the pitcher?
It was a bad call, but it was also bad baseball on the Angels part.
