WB greenlights the Aquaman pilot.

Then again:

"In the comic, Aquaman's the lost king of Atlantis, but in our version, he is Arthur Curry, this twentysomething who owns a dive shop."

Not a king, but a bait-shop owner. So, in other words, they've greenlit a show that actually isn't Aquaman. It's Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel, the Series.

Well, if Arthur can spend three weeks underwater without coming up for air, and can swim at 110 knots, and talk to dolphins, but can't figure out why he's different from the human folk around him, that'd make it Man from Atlantis 2.0. Or something.

Well, let's see...

Man from Atlantis -- began in 1977

Aquaman -- began in 1941

Which is the 2.0 now...?

Aquaman: The WB Series is more the 2.0 of Man from Atlantis than it is anything to do with Aquaman is, I think, what [livejournal.com profile] xforge was after

WB Greenlights Wonder Woman pilot:

"In the comic, Wonder Woman's the Amazon Princess of Paradise Island ruled by her mother, but in our version, she is Diana Prince, this twentysomething who is the star dancer at the Amazons of Paradise Island strip club, owned by her mother."

But of course...especially her catfights with The Cheetah, rival dancer and owner of the rival namesake club down the street...

So that makes Orm, what, the ultra-sleazy owner of the juicebar/fitness joint nextdoor that tries to force Aquaman off the beach so he can expand his parking lot?

This week's special guest star, David Hasselhoff as Vulko, Arthur's uncle and mentor from the bayou come to teach him the art of ecological knot-tying.

er.... I think there is a world of difference between a dive shop and a bait shop.

Unless, maybe, you're fishing for something on the rather large side....

Yes. And if I were a WB executive, I'm sure our conversation would go like this:

"So how's the Aquaman comic sell?"

"Well, we put it out so we keep the rights, but really it's been cancelled about four times over the past decade. But we keep revamping it so that our lost king of Atlantis will be relevant to kids!"

"Right. So what you're asking me is to commit millions of dollars to underwater FX and filming to produce a show based on a comic that doesn't sell."

"Um... And then we have this alternative version of Aquaman!"

Why not? We can assume there will be some water action - just not the king of the sea stuff. And the fact is, the name has recognition. People know Aquaman, even if they don't know that much about it, so the franchise has some value. The fanboys will kvetch, but they'll show up in droves anyway no matter what you do, and sometimes the furor will even create new PR (as witness Batman).

I was being facetious, by the way. The idea that WW has to be published is an urban legend, actually. Found that out last week.

Sure. Comic Book Urban Legends Revealed (http://goodcomics.blogspot.com/2005/06/comic-book-urban-legends-revealed.html). Good stuff.

Then again, you really should be reading Dave's Long Box anyway, and he was the one who pointed me at this....

I'm not surprised. Medicority is quickly becoming the WB's middle name... just like "we bough it to kill it" is the one for the Fox entertainment channels.

As [livejournal.com profile] dwivian said, a dive shop is nothing like a bait shop. A dive shop sells SCUBA and snorkeling equipment, which makes perfect sense for a character like Aquaman.

Right. It'll be Aquaman, snarking at bad movies with two robots at his side.
