Aquaman, the series
Jan. 9th, 2006 10:28 amWB greenlights the Aquaman pilot.
Then again:
"In the comic, Aquaman's the lost king of Atlantis, but in our version, he is Arthur Curry, this twentysomething who owns a dive shop."
Not a king, but a bait-shop owner. So, in other words, they've greenlit a show that actually isn't Aquaman. It's Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel, the Series.

Date: 2006-01-09 04:03 pm (UTC)"So how's the Aquaman comic sell?"
"Well, we put it out so we keep the rights, but really it's been cancelled about four times over the past decade. But we keep revamping it so that our lost king of Atlantis will be relevant to kids!"
"Right. So what you're asking me is to commit millions of dollars to underwater FX and filming to produce a show based on a comic that doesn't sell."
"Um... And then we have this alternative version of Aquaman!"

Date: 2006-01-09 04:40 pm (UTC)The question is, why would WB want the rights if they retain no aspects of the underwater F/X stuff? Aquaman is a concept that will either appeal to the fanboys (who would, rightly, expect the underwater stuff), or to the snarkers (which doens't seem to be the focus, and even they'd expect major underwater events). Cheap as the rights to Aquaman might be, it'd be even cheaper to create, "Joe Smith, Bait Shop Guy," or even to secure the rights to, say, "Sea Hunt."
btw, I'm not totally ruling out the possibility of the series being good, or of them evolving it into the undersea show (if it follows the Smallville path, Arthur could slowly discover powers and an undersea heritage). I'm just saying that it seems an odd pitch.
