My new laptop -- a 15" Powerbook G4 -- arrived at work last week.

So of course Apple announces the ludicrously nice MacBook Pro today.

Granted, they won't be out for another month, and I needed the laptop sooner, and it's not like I plopped down my own cash. But dammit, I've got tech envy. And lust (in the case of the new iMacs).

No FireWire 800. No PC Card slot. No modem. Rev A.

Not touching it, nice as it sounds. I've supported too many Rev A products. In a year or two, when our current laptop has gotten long in the tooth and more programs are universal binaries and the pioneers have had most of their arrow wounds healed...then I'll want one.

The Rev A thing is legit, but I could care less about the rest. I haven't used a modem in years, ditto PC Cards. And Firewire 800 is nice, but so far from essential.

Or you could do what I did: pay 700 for an IBM laptop and install SuSE Linux on it. Total cost including software for life = $700

there needs to be a patch for tech envy. My boyfriend told me when I got home from work about how he exercised "extreme will power" not buy the new laptop when he already has a laptop AND a desktop.
