Keen Thursday links and TV stuff
Feb. 16th, 2006 09:14 amDan Bricklin, co-creator of VisiCalc, has developed Wikicalc. It's pretty much what you'd expect from the name, and the alpha version runs on Mac/Windows/Linux. (Link ganked from the always-entertaining Rocketboom).
The RIAA is claiming that ripping CDs to play on your iPod or other MP3 player is not legal (in spite of having admitted otherwise in court in the past). Every time they pull crap like this, I find myself less inclined to buy CDs at all.
Real Time with Bill Maher returns tomorrow! You think there'll be a Dick Cheney hunting joke or three? The delightful Helen Thomas has already been announced as one of his guests.
Since Veronica Mars was on hiatus, we caught Lost last night, which was nifty, but I'm also a wee bit concerned that, judging from the "previously" and from the episode itself, nothing at all has happened in the three or four episodes that we missed. But hey, Clancy Brown! Guess having
kingofbreakfast as a writer has an influence on casting. :-)
Drawn Together wasn't as good as usual, but was still funny. They pulled off one of the few genuinely funny fart jokes in years (since 1975, actually). And the Hero/Xander plotline was great from the start.
Next week, no new Lost, no Scrubs, no new Veronica Mars, no Gilmore Girls, no new Everybody Hates Chris. Man, our Tivo's going to be sad. At least we get House and Drawn Together.

Date: 2006-02-16 03:04 pm (UTC)Drawn Together does rock. It gives me some hope for animation in the US. The new stuff on Adult Swim is abyssmal.

Date: 2006-02-16 03:09 pm (UTC)Was Clancy bearded or clean shaving? Trying to see if the standard Clancy rules apply.
I keep trying to get the guy who runs my LARP to make Clancy come back and play. He used to show up occasionally, before my time.

Date: 2006-02-16 03:25 pm (UTC)It is more funny and weird.
Basically a minimalist LARP/D&D comedy/improv/adventure show.

Screw them. Tho i've yet to make full direct backup copies
of my rarer cds, i do make WMA's (changing that to MP3 now
that i have WMP-10) of my fav music from my fav cds to play
on my PPC.
And when i remake 160-180kbps mp3's of my fav neogoth cuts
i'm going to figure out how to add a indirect page to my homepage so a few friends can hear them too.
That said, i still buy cds of groups i like and rare classics (shrug)
For example, i just won the DCC gold cd of Highway 61 Revisited
by Bob Dylan at the same price it came out in Hvd Sq in 92 :)

Date: 2006-02-16 04:19 pm (UTC)I am one of the few old-timers who have very little love for the iTunes/MP3 boom. It may be convenient but the permanence just isn't there. These are copies of the things you buy on a magnetic medium (iPod, hard drive) which can too easily be destroyed. Even those that are "burned" to CD may only have a lifespan of 5 to 20 years, much shorter than a manufactured CD. I think a lot of people are going to be very dispointed when favorite music starts going away on their chosen medium in the future and they don't have backups.
