Went to the Ren Faire today, as we'd won four tickets in Elayna's school auction.

I showed great restraint, not purchasing anything at any of the shops. I did, however, make it home with a fun case of sunburn. Aloe lotion is my friend.

I was greatly disappointed in the new food item I'd heard about -- gator on a stick. Alas, instead of chunks of gator, it was more a fried crabcake sort of thing, with the gator meat shredded and mixed with other stuff, so it just didn't have as distinct a flavor. I made up for it by also having myself a scotch egg (yum!) and a pork loin on a stick. mmm, food on a stick.

We also consumed tons of iced coffee and water, as it was hot. Really hot. See the sunburn comment above.

[livejournal.com profile] shadesong and Elayna both got intricate hair braids and henna tattoos, and Elayna bought her first set of Crystal Stix. And I'm very likely to borrow them at some point, as they were quite fun to play with (the folks at Crystal Styx allow folks to play with the toys as much as they want.

Elayna was given a $20 budget for rides and games, and spent $18 of it on the bungee-jump/trampoline thing that sends her thirty feet into the air.

Show-wise, we caught the modified Birds of Prey show, which now covers other animals -- they had a snapping turtle, an alligator, and snakes as well as the usual hawk and peregrine. We also caught The Lost Boys, one of my favorite Ren Fest bands, who were as wonderful as always. The only other full show we caught was a toy-off between the Crystal Styx folks and the folks at a toy sphere booth. It was quite entertaining, especially once the fires started. Seriously.

The theme was The Three Musketeers (combined with the traditional Henry VIII that the GA Ren Fest always does). We caught the opening ceremony and I also got to see the first act inside (including lots of swordfighting). As always, the folks at this show do a wonderful job, although I'm disconcerted by the new Henry (nothing wrong with him, but he's nothing like the previous one).

We met up with [livejournal.com profile] katfireblade for a goodly portion of the day (she also ate food on a stick -- sausage, I believe), and had great fun with her, as always.

Shows I wish I'd managed to catch: Ded Bob, The Tortuga Twins, Hack and Slash, and the new guy who apparently uses firecrackers and water balloons in his act. I caught Bob and Hack and Slash last year, at least, and caught walking-by snippets of each this year.

Tomorrow, Elayna flies south for the summer, and Shadesong flies north for a week. The house is all aflutter with packing, none of it mine.

Sounds like quite the day!!

Sorry you missed the Twins - they're old friends of mine and I'm quite jealous that you even get to be near them... they're not coming here this year, I believe.

Still... thanks for sharing your day!! :)

*nods* Chaos indeed... but we wanted one last family day before a summer apart! So I'm tired as I'm packing, but I think it was worth it.

There will be two-fisted tales of Boston, oh yes...

One of these days I should actually go to a renfaire. I'm quite sure the Demon Seed would adore being flung thirty feet in the air. :-D

Just pretend Adam was quoting that worm guy from Labyrinth: "Did you say 'hello'?" "No, I said 'aloe.'"

Renfaires are fun.
There's one up here, The Three Barons, held every June. It's not very big and there are no rides, but the Tomato Show isn't to be missed and the stalls have some interesting bits and pieces.
You've got me all psyched for it! :D

I went to Scarborough Faire, here in Texas, over the weekend. I also ate food on sticks (steak). :) I've heard the Atlanta fair is great.

I haven't seen Hack-n-Slash in years, but their act was one of my favorites.
